Those looking to discover nature and local history in San José Del Cabo will find different ways to do so: the protected estuary, the Misión Estero de las Palmas de San José del Cabo Añuití, and art and culinary offerings on set days of the week. You can plan your stay around what interests you most—bird habitat and a walking trail, or historic architecture and local culture.

Nature at the Estero de San José del Cabo

On October 8, 1993, the Estero de San José del Cabo was designated a state ecological reserve in the category of a protected area for ecological preservation. In 2008, it was recognized as a Ramsar site, with its international hydrological importance highlighted, particularly its importance as a habitat for birds. These protected and recognized statuses make the estuary an important nature feature to consider during a stay in San José Del Cabo.

There is a well-marked walking trail around the estuary. If you want to include nature and exercise in your trip, you can make this trail a focus of your plans. There are few visitor facilities at the estuary, so bring enough food and water for the day. The trail and limited facilities are practical considerations to keep in mind when planning your day.

Mission, Local History and Art Walk

The Misión Estero de las Palmas de San José del Cabo Añuití was founded in April 1730 by Fathers José de Echeverría and Nicolás Tamaral. Its exterior façade has retained its original design through restorations. Another building also tells part of the mission’s history: the house now converted into the Casa de la Cultura Profr. Alfredo Green González originally served as the rectory for the priests of the Misioneros del Añuití. These two buildings offer different points of interest for those curious about the town’s historical development and architecture.

The Art Walk passes through the historic town center, along cobblestone streets and past colonial architecture and gardens. It features local art galleries, boutiques and open-air exhibitions. The Art Walk takes place every Thursday from November to June. You can therefore plan your visit for a particular day of the week during this period. Those who enjoy strolling through the streets and taking in art and the built environment will find a different experience here than on the walking trail around the estuary.

Culinary Culture on Tuesday Evenings

Sabores San José is a weekly culinary walking tour in downtown San José del Cabo and takes place every Tuesday evening. The program includes live music featuring traditional pieces and folkloric dance performances. Alongside nature and architecture, it offers an evening activity centered on local culture. If you plan your trip around particular experiences, the days of the week are clearly distinct: the culinary walking tour takes place on Tuesdays, while the Art Walk takes place on Thursdays from November to June.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: a visit to the protected estuary, the history of the mission, art and architecture in the historic town center, or a culinary evening with music and dance. These are different interests to consider when planning a vacation, not one single activity.
