Discover Saint-Joseph through a variety of experiences: peaceful walks in the Jardin du Centenaire, outdoor activities and visible traces of local history. The Croix Mission at the entrance to the Bourg combines a distinctive landmark with a religious tradition. This gives you options for planning your trip, from peaceful discoveries to active days.

Experience nature: from walks to hikes

The natural landscapes of Saint-Joseph are ideal for river swimming, hiking, picnics and wellness in nature. The forests around Cœur Bouliki are perfect for hiking. You can tailor your outings to the kind of experience you want: exercise on forest paths, time by the water or a quieter break in nature.

One specific hiking option is the signposted Boucle de Rabuchon: it is 5.8 kilometres long, takes around two hours and 30 minutes and has 380 metres of elevation gain. The route is rated as moderate and is suitable for hikers in good physical condition. Its approximate duration and elevation profile can help you plan it as a dedicated active outing; it offers a different kind of nature experience from a peaceful walk.

Peaceful paths in the Bourg

The Jardin du Centenaire in the Bourg of Saint-Joseph is a place for peaceful walks. Bamboo, palms, balisiers and alpinias grow along the banks of the Rivière Blanche. The garden pairs a specific place for a stroll with a varied range of plant life. If you would also like to make time for a slower pace during your trip, it offers a different experience from a hike with a stated distance and elevation gain.

Croix Mission and church art

The Croix Mission stands at the entrance to the Bourg. A statue of Christ is attached to the cross. The cross dates back to the period following an evangelisation campaign held in Saint-Joseph before 1925: the Croix Mission was erected afterwards. During Holy Week, worshippers bring flowers there or light candles. This place is therefore both a visible religious landmark and a focus for a devotional practice associated with Holy Week.

The church of Saint-Joseph also features architectural and artistic details. It combines a basilica style with Gothic influences; its two bell towers were added in the 1930s. Three stained-glass windows at the far end of the church, opposite the main entrance, depict Christian scenes. They are dedicated to “Apothéose de Saint-joseph”, “La Sainte Famille de Nazareth” and “La Gloire du Christ”. The architecture and the different subjects of the windows give the church several distinct historical and religious associations.

The commune of Saint-Joseph is also home to the Grotte de Lourdes. When it was inaugurated in 1904, it was one of the most visited pilgrimage sites during Holy Week.

Choose the right focus for your trip

When choosing your holiday rental, you can start by considering which aspects of Saint-Joseph you would like your trip to focus on: peaceful walks in the Bourg, local history and religious art, or active outdoor experiences such as hiking and river swimming. The Boucle de Rabuchon provides specific details on distance, duration, elevation gain and difficulty; the other outdoor activities are described more broadly.
