Bouillante: Hiking and Remembrance
Accommodation in Bouillante
Hiking Trails and Remembrance
Bouillante offers different ways to explore the town and its surroundings: hiking trails lead towards Village and between named districts, while the Mémorial pour la Liberté recalls the history of slavery and resistance to it. You can shape your holiday days around your own interests—with challenging hikes, a cultural and historical discovery, or a mix of both.
The Trace des Crêtes lies in the wider Bouillante region. A trail guide dated March 2017 describes it as a difficult, 10 km hiking route that takes five hours. Conditions on the trail may change. Its distance, stated duration and difficulty rating give you a concrete framework when planning a longer hike. On the Trace des Crêtes, the route leads from the summit of Piton de Bouillante towards Village.
Another connection is described by the Trace de la Crêtes des Bois, which runs between the Village and Desmarais sections of Bouillante. This is distinct from the Trace des Crêtes par Bon Air, which is closer to the destination. From there, you can continue on other hiking trails southwest towards Village or northeast towards Piton de Bouillante. Caution is advisable in the rain, as the trail may be slippery.
The Crêtes de Village–Dupuy hike also offers a clear starting point: it begins in Bouillante on Route de Village, in the Dupuy section. Taken together, the route details answer different questions—from a hike’s duration and difficulty rating to connections between sections and possible hiking directions. When planning, it is worth keeping these differences in mind rather than treating all the trails as similar outings.
A Place of Remembrance in Village
In the south of Bouillante, above the Village district, the Mémorial pour la Liberté de Bouillante stands in the square in front of Habitation d’Huy. Its displays emphasise different aspects of history. The statue of the enslaved rebel represents the resistance of enslaved people who were forcibly deported from Africa and compelled to work on colonial plantations.
The bust of Victor Schoelcher recalls revolutionaries’ fight to abolish slavery in the French colonies. Together, the statue and bust draw attention both to the resistance of enslaved people and to the political struggle against slavery. The memorial thus offers a concrete opportunity to explore different aspects of this history during your trip.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Bouillante, you can choose according to the experiences you want to shape your stay. If hiking is your priority, possible points of reference include the stated duration and difficulty of the Trace des Crêtes, the Village–Desmarais connection, or the trail options at Bon Air. If you would rather focus on remembrance, the memorial and its two displays take centre stage. These interests can also be combined; which ones you explore in greater depth is up to you and your travel plans.
