Castle Bruce can be explored through several different travel interests: Anse Quanery, also called St. David’s Bay, is the main beach; Richmond is the endpoint of Section 5 of the Waitukubuli National Trail; and the area’s history stretches from a sugar plantation to a church built in the 20th century. These connections represent different scales—beach, regional hiking section and historical events. For planning your trip, it is therefore worth deciding first which perspective on Castle Bruce interests you most.

Main Beach at Anse Quanery

Castle Bruce’s main beach is at Anse Quanery, also called St. David’s Bay. Both names refer to the same beach and give the area a specific coastal setting. When choosing a holiday rental, check the location of the specific property separately: the destination name Castle Bruce does not automatically mean that accommodation is right on the beach.

A Regional Hiking Section

Section 5 of the Waitukubuli National Trail ends in Richmond, Castle Bruce. The endpoint is named in the area, while the figures for distance and duration refer to the regional section: approximately 17.4 kilometres and about six hours. These figures do not describe a trail through Castle Bruce or the time needed to visit the main beach. When planning your day, it helps to distinguish the endpoint’s location from the full stage’s length and time requirement. This makes it easier to consider the hike as a separate, several-hour part of your trip, without automatically linking it to a beach visit or a particular accommodation location.

Plantation History and Islets

Castle Bruce was established as a sugar plantation by slave owners, including James Bruce. The islets of Castle Bruce, the area’s main feature, were very important for shipping rum, molasses and lime from the plantation to Europe. The area’s history thus connects the plantation with a specific trade route, in which the islets played a central role. For travellers interested in history, this establishes a clear link between the area and the goods shipped to Europe at the time.

A Dated Connection to Church History

On 12 August 1952, Bishop Antoon Demets C.Ss.R. blessed the cornerstone of the new church in Castle Bruce. Demets was Coadjutor Bishop of Roseau from 1946 to 1954; the church is known as Our Lady of Health. The blessing of the cornerstone took place during his tenure as coadjutor bishop. This gives the church’s history a specific time reference and adds a different historical subject to the history of the sugar plantation.

What These Themes Mean for Choosing Accommodation

The name Castle Bruce does not answer the first question on its own, while the approximately 17.4 kilometres and about six hours help put the second in terms of time. This lets you compare the specific accommodation location with your own travel plans without equating accommodation with the hiking route.
