Saint David: Kalinago Culture and Atlantic Coast
Accommodation in Saint David
Saint David brings together striking Atlantic coastal scenery, Kalinago culture and trails through villages and lush vegetation. In Salybia, in the Carib Territory, Kalinago Barana Autê is located on the rugged Atlantic coast. The natural features of the site range from a flowing river and tranquil pools to a small waterfall, coastal forest and sea views.
Atlantic Coast and Water Features
The Crayfish River flows through the village of Kalinago Barana Autê and plunges into the Atlantic at the two-tiered Isulukati Falls, also known as Anba So. Other scenic spots offer different highlights: the Centipede Trail is on the coast; its geological formations resemble a centipede. Horseback Ridge offers views of the Atlantic coast and the lush Pagua River valley. Lover Pool is in Gaulette River, a five-minute walk from the main road, and is shaped like a boat. Charles Warner Pool can be reached after a one-hour hike. In Castle Bruce, Anse Quanery is identified as the main beach; the name St. David’s Bay is also used.
Kalinago Culture and Traditions
Dances, theatre and songs from Kalinago traditions are performed daily at the main karbet at Kalinago Barana Autê; the programme may change. Visitors can make and sample traditional cassava bread there. Kalinago Barana Autê also has an interpretation centre. Demonstrations of traditional Kalinago crafts and Kalinago canoe-building must be booked at least three days in advance.
In the wider destination of Dominica, the Kalinago Territory is home to the Kalinago, descendants of Dominica’s original inhabitants. Karina Cultural Village also offers traditional performances; local cuisine is available there on request. At Kasayo Kalinago Huts, you can visit traditional Kalinago huts and learn about how they are built. These offer different ways to experience the culture: performances, insights into traditional crafts, and cuisine on request.
Hiking and Trip Planning
In the wider region, the Waitukubuli National Trail is 184 km long, comprises 14 segments and runs from Scott’s Head in the south to Cabrits National Park in the north. Segment 6 runs from Richmond in the village of Castle Bruce through the Kalinago Territory to Hatten Garden; the route passes through Kalinago villages and lush vegetation. It is considered a moderate to difficult hike. Segment 6 offers views of the Atlantic coast and the Tourism National Parks Facility, which provides services for the trail and Kalinago Barana Autê.
In Dominica, visitors and non-residents must purchase a trail pass to access or hike the Waitukubuli National Trail. Passes are available at Kalinago Barana Autê in Salybia; confirm the current pass arrangements before travelling.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can start with the focus of your trip: trail hikes, coastal scenery or Kalinago culture each lead to different selection criteria. Demonstrations of crafts and canoe-building must be booked at least three days in advance; the daily cultural programme may also change.
