Harbour, village and coastal landscape

Cap-aux-Meules combines the history of a fishing harbour with a landscape that changes distinctly in two directions: to the south, the sea and red sandstone cliffs mark the edge of the village, while wooded hills lie to the north. The village grew up around its harbour. This mix can be a good starting point when choosing a vacation rental. Consider whether you’d like to connect your stay more with the village and harbour area, with views of the sea and archipelago, or with both. Place des gens de mer is close to the dock in the centre of the village area. Shops, a café and a bakery are also nearby. Here, the harbour and everyday village destinations come together.

From Place des gens de mer, you can access the Sentier du Littoral and the Butte du Cap-aux-Meules lookout. The coastal trail is 2 kilometres long and shared by pedestrians and cyclists. At the entrance, a staircase with 187 steps leads to a lookout at the summit of the cape. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: from the Sentier, the panorama extends to Île d’Entrée and the harbour; from the Butte, you can see the archipelago and the sea. When planning your day, you can choose between the coastal trail and the lookout with views of the archipelago.

Traces of the village and local discoveries

The village centre also tells the story of the harbour’s development. The section of the main street adjoining the harbour preserves traces of a time before the automobile. Saint-André Church offers another perspective, with a more recent building history: it was built in 1967 and received a B rating (exceptionnelle) from the Conseil du patrimoine religieux. If you’d like to include architecture and local history alongside the coastal landscape, you’ll find different points of interest here: traces of the pre-automobile era on the main street, and the church with its own building history and rating.

La Machine offers a unique glimpse into local production. The workers’ cooperative operates a boutique on Chemin du Quai in Cap-aux-Meules and makes unique products from reused clothing from the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. The material and its reuse are an integral part of what makes these products distinctive. If you’re interested in regional design and craft ideas, you can discover this aspect of the village alongside its harbour, landscape and history.

The Marché du Village brings additional seasonal offerings to Place des gens de mer. The event takes place every second Wednesday from the beginning of summer through the end of September. It features stalls, tastings and snacks, culinary activities, musical performances, and educational games for the whole family. Food, music and playful learning make the market more than a visit to the stalls. For families, the offerings combine tastings and entertainment with educational games, making room for different interests in a shared market experience.

There are restaurants and bars on Chemin du Quai and Chemin Principal. These streets are also home to an event hall and shops selling regional products and souvenirs. For your trip planning, these offer another way to get a feel for village life: you can consider whether local products, dining or events matter to you alongside coastal and harbour experiences. Place des gens de mer, the main street and the addresses mentioned each offer their own glimpse of Cap-aux-Meules, without requiring your stay to revolve around a single theme.
