Dryden
Accommodation in Dryden
Dryden combines waterside experiences with trails through the city and a varied cultural scene. On the Wabigoon River, Cooper Park invites you to picnic and watch birds. There are also opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as a variety of hiking and cycling trails. If you’re planning a trip that brings together nature, outdoor activities and events, Dryden offers several options to help shape your daily itinerary.
Waterfront Park and Water Activities
Cooper Park is a waterfront park on the Wabigoon River. Picnicking and birdwatching give your visit two different focuses: you can spend time in the park or turn your attention to the birds. The trail through Cooper Park is part of the Dryden Signature Trail. The Roy Wilson Suspension Bridge also crosses the Wabigoon River, offering another distinctive connection to the river.
The city limits also include Aaron Provincial Park, an Ontario provincial park operated by the City of Dryden. It is located on the Trans-Canada Highway. The park has fully equipped campsites for short and longer stays, two beaches, a trail network, lake access and fishing opportunities. This makes the park a distinct focus for days centred on spending time outdoors and activities on the lake. The campsites are separate from the vacation rental options.
There are several access points in Dryden for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on Wabigoon Lake and Thunder Lake. These activities add two specifically named lakes to the options at Aaron Provincial Park. If you’re looking to accommodate different interests within your travel group, you can treat water activities, trails and park visits as separate elements of your trip planning.
Trails for Different Outings
The Urban Trail System covers 12.3 kilometres and has five routes through Dryden. The Nature in the City Trail System connects different natural areas around the city centre; its trails are suitable for hiking, jogging, cycling and skiing. This gives you a choice between an urban route network and a trail system suited to different activities when planning your outings.
For longer distances, the Ghost Lake/Mavis Lake trail network covers a total of 22 kilometres. It is suitable for experienced cyclists and hikers. Its stated length and intended users are useful points to consider when choosing an outing to suit your hiking or cycling plans. If your stay involves shorter routes through the city, the Urban Trail System, with its five routes, offers a different option. The two systems differ in length and stated suitability.
Culture and Events
Dryden is connected with Paawidigong, an Anishinaabe name meaning “place of rapids.” The events calendar also offers a variety of cultural experiences: the Dryden Entertainment Series brings live music, theatre, dance and comedy performances to Dryden, and presents seven to nine concerts a year.
Powwows in Dryden include the Leonard Sky Memorial Powwow at Dryden High School and the National Indigenous People's Day Powwow at Dryden Memorial Arena. Both are open to everyone. The Dryden & District Fall Fair takes place in August and features agriculture, equestrian events, livestock competitions, an amusement park and local food. If you’re travelling with family, you can include different kinds of events in your travel group’s plans, without focusing your stay solely on nature activities.
Sandy Beach Golf Club is also part of the recreational offerings: its 9-hole course is on the north shore of the Wabigoon Chain of Lakes, in the Sandy Beach Park Recreation Area in Dryden. Alongside the waterside activities, trails and performances, it adds to the wide range of possible travel interests. When looking for a vacation rental in Dryden, you can start by considering whether nature trails, water activities, culture or a combination of these will shape your stay.
