Haldimand County is a landscape of rivers, forests, wetlands and places with a history of their own. You can choose from a range of activities for your trip: experience the Grand River along its trails, explore natural areas, or visit museums and historic buildings. The routes themselves also vary considerably—from short, paved paths to longer multi-use trails.
River Landscapes and Carolinian Nature
Ruthven Park covers nearly 1,500 acres of Carolinian forest, wetlands, shoreline and aquatic habitats along the Grand River, meadows and actively farmed agricultural land. The grounds are free to visit and explore. Other Carolinian habitats in the county include forests, prairies and tallgrass savannas, wetlands, streams, shorelines and other aquatic habitats. The Ruigrok Tract in Dunnville consists of a large, contiguous interior forest. Tree species found there include White Ash, White Oak, Red Oak, Swamp Oak and Hard Maple. You can also discover the region’s character in various ways along the water. The six-kilometre Rotary Riverside Trail runs downstream from Caledonia, parallel to the Grand River. The Haldimand section of the Waterfront Trail follows quiet country roads lined with waterfront homes and passes through Dunnville, one of the larger communities on the Lake Erie Waterfront Trail.
Trails for Different Days of Discovery
If you’re planning walks or bike rides as part of your trip, Haldimand County offers more than 40 kilometres of trails and paths for outdoor recreation. The Cayuga Grand Vista is a 3.2-kilometre multi-use trail for hiking, cycling and walking. Its loop includes Munsee Street, Highway 3 and King George Street, as well as the Grand River. In Jarvis, the 1.2-kilometre walking trail in Jarvis Lions Park is paved, lit and fully accessible. The four-kilometre Townsend Recreation Trail is also paved and lit; this multi-use walking trail passes through Townsend and crosses Nanticoke Creek.
Other routes offer a different experience. The Gypsum Mine Tract is 12.2 kilometres long and runs partly through a natural area and partly along roads. It connects to the Chippewa Trail and the Rotary Riverside Trail. The 1.6-kilometre Blue Heron Way is a natural multi-use trail that leads from Hutchinson Road to the Gord Harry Trail and continues toward Niagara. Roadside parking is available. When planning your day, compare each route’s length and described course rather than assuming one trail shares the characteristics of another.
Museums and History
The Edinburgh Square Heritage and Cultural Centre in Caledonia is housed in a building built in 1857 by renowned architect John Turner. It formerly served as Caledonia’s town hall and jail. The Nicholas Log Cabin is on permanent display at the Haldimand County Museum and Archive in Cayuga, offering a glimpse into pioneer life. Since 2003, the No. 6 RCAF Museum in Dunnville has preserved artifacts and training aircraft from the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP).
Haldimand Museums comprises three museums featuring exhibits, workshops, holiday camps and school programs. The Heritage Centre offers year-round exhibitions, special events and programs for all ages.
