Lunenburg combines a preserved colonial town layout with a history that remains visible today in historic buildings and maritime collections. There are also guided town experiences and activities on the water. When planning your trip, the question is therefore not only which activities interest you, but also whether you want to focus on the Old Town, the fishing heritage, or outdoor pursuits.

Old Town and historic buildings

The Old Town Lunenburg Heritage Conservation District lies on a hilly peninsula between Lunenburg Harbour and Back Harbour. The area includes waterfront and shipyard buildings. Lunenburg’s Old Town was founded in 1753; its original rectangular street grid and planned British colonial layout have been preserved. The district is also valued for its traditional architecture and its longstanding importance as a centre of maritime industries.

A prominent landmark is Lunenburg Academy: a three-storey Victorian wooden building in the Second Empire style, visible for many miles. In 1983, it was designated both a Provincial Heritage Property and a National Historic Site. Those interested in architecture and the town’s history will find a special point of connection here, while the street grid reveals the planned character of the Old Town.

Knaut-Rhuland House Museum is a Georgian National Historic Site built around 1793. Costumed tours, permanent and changing exhibits, and a largely unchanged historic interior offer different perspectives on the house. The combination of the building and the guided tour makes this a distinctive way to learn about Lunenburg’s past.

Fishing, boatbuilding, and town stories

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic presents fishing heritage and boatbuilding in former fish-processing buildings and a Big Boat Shed on the Lunenburg waterfront. The First Fishers Exhibit offers a distinctive perspective: it presents the beginnings of fishing in Nova Scotia from a Mi’kmaw perspective. The Bluenose Gallery houses the largest collection of artifacts from the original Bluenose. A visit to the museum thus takes you from early fishing through boatbuilding to a well-known name in maritime history.

You can also explore the town’s history outside of exhibitions. Lunenburg Walking Tours employs local guides who share the town’s history, folklore, and superstitions. Trot in Time Buggy Rides offers a two-kilometre carriage tour through historic Lunenburg, accompanied by historical commentary and local legends. If you prefer to get around on foot, this offers a different way to discover the town than the carriage tour.

On the water and on the trail

Expedition Nova Scotia offers a two-hour Zodiac tour through the Lunenburg and Mahone Bay archipelago, focusing on ecosystems, wildlife, and geology. The Bluenose II offers two-hour harbour cruises in Lunenburg and Halifax when they are included in its published schedule. Both experiences put the water at the centre, but have different focuses: one on nature and landscape, the other on a harbour cruise.

For a longer outdoor outing, the 119-kilometre Rum Runners Trail connects Halifax and Lunenburg. It is suitable for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. If you would like to include an activity like this in your trip, take the trail into account when choosing where to stay and planning the rest of your journey. Lunenburg is located along Nova Scotia’s Lighthouse Route, about 90 minutes from Halifax; the easiest way to get there is by car.

Another facet of the town is Ironworks Distillery. It is located in a maritime blacksmith shop building dating from 1893, makes spirits by hand, and offers a complimentary tasting. When choosing a vacation rental, consider the focus of your trip: if the Old Town, museums, and local guided tours are priorities, focus your search on Lunenburg; for excursions or activities along the Rum Runners Trail, factor in how they fit with the rest of your trip.
