Greenwood: Aviation History and Recreational Activities
Accommodation in Greenwood
Greenwood offers a special way to explore the history of military aviation: the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum is located at 14 Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Visitors can also find ideas for exercise, water fun, and play. This makes it possible to shape your stay around a wide range of interests.
Aviation History at 14 Wing
The Greenwood Military Aviation Museum offers a free, self-guided tour featuring historical artifacts and exhibits. The museum includes an Air Park with historically significant aircraft from the Second World War, the Cold War era, and the field of Search and Rescue. The different periods and themes give the aviation collection a clear breadth. If you are interested in military aviation, you can plan your museum visit as a highlight of your trip to Greenwood.
Trails, Water, and Play Areas
The Fitness Trail runs through the residential areas and starts on Church Street near the Apple Bowl. The full route is 2.2 kilometres; there is also a shorter 1.25-kilometre section. This lets you choose between these two route lengths when planning your day.
The Outdoor Pool has a 25-metre, eight-lane pool as well as a wading pool with water features. The Community Recreation Playground is right next to the Outdoor Pool. There are also three playgrounds in the residential areas at 14 Wing Greenwood. Children have another option at Roo's, a large indoor play centre in Greenwood Mall. These facilities offer different kinds of activities—from a lap pool and water features to playgrounds and an indoor play centre.
The Outdoor Pool can be rented for parties or groups. Two lifeguards are permitted for up to 25 swimmers. For more than 25 swimmers, an additional lifeguard is required at extra cost. If you are considering a group event, this limit is an important detail to plan for. Use of the Fitness and Sport Centre on the base requires a membership fee; the Trail and Sport Centre are therefore different options to consider when choosing an activity.
Greenwood as a Travel Destination
Greenwood is on Route 201 and 3 kilometres from Highway 101. This road access may be useful when choosing a holiday rental if you are planning your trip around these routes. The range of recreational activities offers other considerations: a visit to the aviation museum, a walk on the Fitness Trail, and the water or play facilities each suit different kinds of day plans.
Winter sports are also part of the local scene: Greenwood Gardens Arena is a sports facility for hockey, skating, and broomball. Its closure for the 2026/2027 operating season has been announced. If you are planning a trip around one of these sports, take this announced closure into account when planning your season.
