Neguac: Nature and Acadian History
Accommodation in Neguac
In Neguac, Acadian history and nature experiences by the salt water go hand in hand. Île-aux-Foins Park combines walking trails and information panels about nature with a shallow saltwater beach. Historic sites tell the stories of the community’s early families and notable figures. When looking for a vacation rental, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Acadian History in Neguac
Otho Robichaud Historic Place is designated a Provincial Historic Place because of its connection to the family of Otho Robichaud. Otho Robichaud was an Acadian justice of the peace in northeastern New Brunswick; the site is on Otho Street in Neguac. Its connection to a named historical figure makes it a tangible starting point for exploring the community’s history.
The Savoie Monument commemorates Neguac’s first settlers and ancestors. Jean Savoie and his wife, Anne Landry, settled here and became Neguac’s first pioneer family after having to flee the Miramichi River in the winter of 1756–1757. The first Savoie family arrived in this area around 1757. Together, the monument and the historic place offer different ways to explore local history: the family story of the first settlers and the memory of Otho Robichaud.
Walking Trails, Nature Panels, and a Saltwater Beach
Île-aux-Foins Park is located on Île-aux-Foins and offers an ecotourism experience as well as opportunities for outdoor activities with the family. A network of walking trails winds through the park; information panels focus on the surrounding flora and fauna. A visit combines outdoor exercise with nature topics highlighted along the way.
The park also has an unsupervised saltwater beach with shallow water. The trails and panels give your visit a different focus from the beach: you can combine a walk and nature observation with time by the water. Keep in mind when planning that the beach is unsupervised.
Parks, Picnic Areas, and Visitor Services
Richelieu Municipal Park is in the heart of the community and includes picnic and recreation areas, a playground, and a splash pad. Its focus differs from that of Île-aux-Foins Park: Richelieu Park centers on recreation and play areas, while Île-aux-Foins combines walking trails, flora and fauna, and a saltwater beach.
There is also a picnic area and a playground at the lighthouse site on Hay Island, which is accessible via the causeway to Hay Island. Neguac Wharf on Church Street offers water, electricity, a boat launch, and parking. The Neguac Visitor Information Centre offers visitor advice, a shop selling local souvenirs, and a disposal station for RVs.
If you are traveling with children, the playground and splash pad at Richelieu Municipal Park, as well as the playground at the lighthouse site, are specific amenities to consider. Île-aux-Foins, in turn, combines walking trails with outdoor activities explicitly geared toward families. You can choose between the sites based on the kind of day you have planned, rather than viewing them as interchangeable day-trip destinations.
Choosing the Right Vacation Rental for Your Trip
When looking for a vacation rental in Neguac, you can start with the experiences you want. Those who want to focus on nature and trails will find a clear fit at Île-aux-Foins Park; picnicking, recreation, and play are all found at Richelieu Municipal Park. For a historical focus, Otho Robichaud Historic Place and the Savoie Monument offer two distinct themes.
More History in Northumberland County
The wider destination of Northumberland County also has its own distinct historical themes. Nelson Hollow Bridge is considered the oldest covered bridge in New Brunswick and the only remaining covered bridge in Northumberland County. In Doaktown, Doak House is a protected Classical-style historic home built by Robert Doak around 1820. These examples add to the picture of the region’s history; they are distinct sites in Northumberland County, not features of Neguac.
