Newdale’s history is closely tied to the railway and the relocation of the community centre. In 1885, with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the area, the community moved north from its former site to the railway line. This former site was later called Oldale. Anyone interested in how a place developed will find a tangible connection here between the railway, postal services and community life.

A town that moved with the railway

Newdale’s first post office also tells the story of this change. It was located in a trading post initially called Cook Brothers trading post and later Newdale. After the railway had been completed westward, the post office was moved about three miles north to the community’s present location. The community’s relocation in 1885 and the later move of the post office were two separate steps in this development. Together, they offer insight into how the railway line shaped the location of the community and its institutions.

Grain farming and change

Grain farming is another part of the town’s history. Two additions were built at the United Grain Growers Grain Elevator in Newdale in 1940 and 1941, prompted by increased demand for grain during the Second World War. The buildings are thus linked to a specific economic development of those years. The United Grain Growers elevators in Newdale closed on July 31, 2000, and were sold into private ownership. The smaller building is no longer in use; its foundation is damaged, while the pit and elevator portion remain. These details trace a development from wartime expansion to later closure.

Community, remembrance and former businesses

Newdale’s institutions and buildings also offer glimpses into different eras. The Newdale Consolidated School building was a two-storey brick structure dating from 1911. The Newdale and District War Memorial was erected between 1919 and 1920 to commemorate the community’s sons who died in the First World War. These two facts point to different aspects of community life: education and public remembrance.

The history of former businesses adds to this picture. The Fanning Block was used as a restaurant until about 1984 and stood vacant in 2019. The Paris Café operated from 1928 to 1938; Choy Soo took over the business afterwards. In 1950, a former machine shop dating from 1939 was converted at the site of the Paris Café into what was then a modern café with a kitchen and living quarters. Families who enjoy tracing how a place has changed through its public institutions and former businesses will find several points of interest in these details.

Community life and choosing a place to stay

Services at Newdale United Church are held on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 10:00 a.m., except in January, July and August. The Newdale Curling Club is a member of CurlManitoba. These two details show different aspects of community life; the service schedule also offers a practical reference when planning the timing of your stay.

Newdale is therefore of particular interest to travellers who want to take railway, grain and community history into account when choosing a destination. These themes give a holiday rental in Newdale a clear local context without reducing the town to a single attraction.
