Alhambra: School History and Nature in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Alhambra
Alhambra combines a distinctive local history with outdoor activities nearby. A permanent monument marks the site of the early school; trails and seasonal water activities are highlights of the nearby recreation areas. When planning a vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worth considering local history and trips to the surrounding area as separate focuses.
School History in Several Stages
In Alhambra, a permanent monument commemorates the site of the early school in School District 2930, which operated from 1914 to 1963. The first Alhambra School was housed in an old log building in 1914 and 1915. In 1916, a new school opened at NE8-39-5-W5. This makes it possible to trace the school’s history from its first two years in the log building through the later development of the school site.
A new two-room school building was constructed at the same site in 1945. It remained in operation until 1963. The community then purchased the school and used it until the mid-1970s. The building was later sold, moved to a new location, and used as a private home. The marked early school site and the building that was later moved belong to different chapters of the community’s history.
A broader historical perspective is offered by “Our Priceless Heritage”: the book covers the history of Alhambra as well as Arbutus, Beaver Flat, Bingley, Horseguard, Oras, Sleepy Valley, and Taimi.
Trails and Camping Nearby
The nearby Chambers Creek Campground is located in Chambers Creek Provincial Recreation Area on Highway 11, west of Rocky Mountain House. It has about 25 campsites, described as rustic sites with easy access to nearby multi-use trails. More than 85 kilometres of developed and informal trails in the area around the campground are available for hiking, mountain biking, and off-highway vehicle riding.
Nearby Horburg Provincial Recreation Area also offers more than 85 kilometres of trails. These are mapped and marked and are suitable for hiking, cycling, and off-highway vehicle riding. Both areas list more than 85 kilometres of trails, but emphasize different features: Chambers Creek mentions developed and informal trails as well as mountain biking, while Horburg mentions mapped and marked trails as well as cycling. Both descriptions provide guidance for hiking and off-highway vehicle riding. Check local conditions before setting out.
Mountain biking is the focus at the Phoenix Whistle Stop. The trail is accessible from a nearby campground, allowing campers to head straight from their site onto the route.
Water Activities and Planning Your Trip
For outings on the water, Horburg Provincial Recreation Area is another option. It provides access to the North Saskatchewan River and serves as a put-in point for canoes, kayaks, jet boats, and rafts. The season for these water activities is limited to spring, summer, and fall. This makes it easy to match your planned travel month with the river activities you have in mind.
When choosing a vacation rental in Alhambra, it helps to first decide on your main focus: would you like to explore the town’s school history, or plan hiking, cycling, and water activities nearby? Campsites and multi-use trails are close together, particularly around Chambers Creek; Horburg combines trails with access to the North Saskatchewan River.
The Spur West Event Center invites visitors to tour its facility. Confirm current visiting arrangements directly with the venue in advance.
