St. Albert
Accommodation in St. Albert
St. Albert combines insights into local history with a botanical park, an extensive trail network and a seasonal farmers’ market. The experiences offer different highlights: you might be interested in a self-guided walking tour, local history exhibits, gardens or activities on the trails. For part of the year, the market also gives a visit its own seasonal focus.
Explore history in different ways
The Founders’ Walk is a self-guided walking tour where visitors can learn about the history of St. Albert. It offers a different way to engage with the community than a visit to an exhibit. At St. Albert Place, the Musée Héritage Museum presents exhibits on local history. The building itself is a historic landmark in downtown St. Albert; it was designated a historic landmark on June 12, 2009.
Historic Juneau House is home to Michif Cultural Connections, which includes a Métis living museum, a library and a gift shop. The shop offers works by local Métis and First Nations artisans. The museum, library and shop each have a different cultural focus: the house brings together insights into Métis culture with a place for books and handicrafts.
Grain Elevator Park is another place where visitors can explore St. Albert’s past. Those interested in the community’s history will find yet another historic stop there, in addition to the walking tour and exhibits.
Gardens and outdoor activities
St. Albert Botanic Park features five acres of themed gardens. These include roses, lilacs, daylilies, Asiatic lilies and peonies, as well as flowering trees and evergreens. The variety makes the park a destination for visitors with a particular interest in gardens and plants. It is the only urban botanical park in the Capital Region.
For active days, St. Albert’s Red Willow Trail System offers 99.5 kilometres of trails. It connects major parks, residential neighbourhoods and areas of the city, and is suitable for hiking, cycling, inline skating and running. Which activity you choose can shape the character of your outing: the trail network can be enjoyed on foot, running, by bike or on inline skates. The stated distance refers to the entire trail system.
Farmers’ market downtown
The farmers’ market in downtown St. Albert takes place every Saturday, rain or shine, from mid-June to early October. With 270 vendors, it is a distinct highlight of the seasonal offerings. Items for sale include produce, homemade baked goods, flowers, woodwork and handmade art. Food and crafts come together in the same market. If you’re planning a visit, you can look to the Saturdays within this period; the market’s all-weather operation is explicitly part of its format.
