Viking combines pioneer history with local recreation and natural attractions in the surrounding area. The Viking Historical Museum displays artifacts, maps and photographs of the area; the Walking Trail leads through Viking, while events at the Rodeo Grounds add a summer highlight. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding whether you want to focus on culture, events, outdoor activities, or water and birdwatching.

Museum, Buildings and Local History

The Viking Historical Museum displays pioneer artifacts, maps and photographs of the area. The grounds feature restored buildings: a church, a store with a post office, a rural school and a farmhouse. The collections and buildings offer different insights into local history. St. Matthew Anglican Church in Viking is also open to visitors.

The Viking Troll Park offers another way to combine Scandinavian history and culture with time outdoors. Visitors of all ages can enjoy nature while experiencing these themes. In Viking, you can choose between museum collections and historic buildings or a park visit with a cultural connection.

Trails, Water and Nature Watching

The Viking Walking Trail links existing sidewalks and road routes into an extended route where you can explore Viking. It is designed for walking, cycling and rollerblading, and can also be used with a stroller, wheelchair or scooter. Use of the trail is free. This information can help you choose an activity: the trail is for exploring the town, while Camp Lake brings together a range of activities on and around the water and in nature.

In the area around Viking, Camp Lake Park has two beaches and offers opportunities for swimming, boating, water skiing, canoeing, hiking and birdwatching. The nearby Camp Lake Campground has a lake, scenic trails and opportunities for birdwatching. The Viking Ribstones are two large stones shaped like an animal’s rib cage that have remained in their original location for millennia. The surrounding area therefore offers experiences ranging from water activities to a remarkable geological site.

Events and Sports

The Cloverlodge Stampede Association holds the annual summer Stampede at the Rodeo Grounds. Every July, the Viking & District Agricultural Society holds chariot and chuckwagon races there. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific event dates before making your plans.

The Viking Golf and Country Club is on the edge of town and has a 9-hole course. The club also holds numerous tournaments each year, so it’s worth checking the current dates for these as well. If you’d prefer a short activity in town, you’ll find the Viking Fish Pond in Viking/Beaver Business Park. It is stocked with rainbow trout. Viking has a safe, fenced off-leash dog park where dogs can run and exercise.

Local Products and Finding Accommodation

The Farmers Market in Viking offers homemade baked goods and fresh produce. Along with the museum, trail and events, it adds to the ways you can tailor your stay to local offerings.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can first decide whether you want to focus on Viking itself, with its history, events and local offerings, or also plan activities in the surrounding area. Camp Lake Park offers a different focus from the museum and town trails: here, the emphasis is on beaches, water sports and birdwatching.
