Canmore reveals itself from different perspectives: walking paths follow Policeman’s Creek and the Bow River, wetlands bring an abundance of birds into view in spring and summer, and historic sites tell the story of the town. There are also mountain views and a network of more than 80 km of roads and trails. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you’d like to focus on short walks, longer routes, nature watching or culture.

Walking paths with different character

The 1.24 km Policeman’s Creek Loop connects Main Street with Spring Creek and includes the Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk. The boardwalk crosses a wetland that is rich in birdlife in spring and summer. This makes for a short walk that also offers a glimpse of the creek’s natural surroundings. If you’d like to plan a longer route, there are other options with clearly specified distances.

The Engine Bridge Loop is 2.03 km long and follows the river on a scenic walk. It offers views of the Bow River and the mountains, and the loop also crosses the historic Canmore Engine Bridge. For a different kind of route, consider the East Bow River Trail: the 5.1 km out-and-back trail offers views of the Bow River and connects to Millennium Park.

The West Bow River Pathway is paved and runs for 5.5 km one way, or 11.0 km as a round trip. It connects the Canmore Boat Launch with Three Sisters and is maintained year-round. The paved Legacy Trail also connects Canmore with Banff and is approximately 22 km long one way. These details help you take the lengths of different route options into account when planning your day, without specifying a walking time.

Nature and views

Quarry Lake Park combines a distinctive history with mountain panoramas: the site was reclaimed from a former mining area. From there, you can enjoy views of Ha Ling Peak, Mount Lady MacDonald and the Rundle Range. Swimming is possible in the park during the summer months; the swimming area is unsupervised. If you’re considering spending time by the water, this is an important detail to keep in mind when planning.

The town’s trail network also offers a range of activities. It includes more than 80 km of roads and trails and allows for activities such as walking, cycling and cross-country skiing in winter. This lets you shape your days according to your interests, without every individual route being suitable for all activities.

History and culture in Canmore

The Canmore North-West Mounted Police (N.W.M.P.) Barracks is one of the oldest surviving North West Mounted Police buildings in Alberta. The Canmore Spur Line is another historic landmark: after the local coal mines closed, it was turned into a walking trail. The Canmore Engine Bridge is part of the Engine Bridge Loop. Together, these places offer insight into different chapters of the town’s history, from its policing history to its mining past.

The Canmore Museum is located in the Canmore Civic Centre in downtown. Its museum shop offers locally made art representing Canmore’s culture, history and landscapes. For music and events, there’s the Stan Rogers Stage, the town’s only outdoor stage. It hosts the Canmore Folk Festival, among other events, which is considered Alberta’s longest-running folk music festival. The festival takes place in Centennial Park, which is owned and managed by the Town of Canmore. The sculpture The Big Head marks the entrance to downtown. Its name is inspired by Canmore’s Gaelic name Ceannmore, meaning “big head” or “chief.”
