A trip to Aldarkhaan can be explored through three themes: protected cultural sites, archaeological history and mountain nature. They come to life through details on human statues, preserved monastery walls and the wildlife designated for Baruun Saikhan. Whichever of these aspects interests you most can be a good starting point for planning your trip.

Cultural monuments with remarkable details

The Mungut Khyasaa human statue monument is located at Bichigtin Bulag in Bag Bogdyn Gol, 21 kilometres east of Aldarkhaan. It is protected by the state as an immovable historical and cultural monument. The location provides a specific reference point for this individual cultural site.

The human statue at Khoshootin Am depicts a headdress and a belted deel. The figure holds a cup in its right hand and a sword in its left. To its left stands a 3.5-metre-high monument of a ritual enclosure. The human statue site was protected by the state as an immovable historical and cultural monument in 2021.

The two human statues at Jigstei Pass also differ in their depictions. One wears a patterned headdress and holds a cup in its right hand; weapons and a knife are depicted below the belt. The other statue holds a cup in its right hand and a sword in its left. Such details make the figures recognisable as distinct motifs, rather than just names in a list.

Other named cultural and natural sites in Aldarkhaan include the Khuurugiin Am burial and kurgan complex and the human statue of Khukh, also called Burdiin Tolgoi. Alongside archaeological sites, the statues, ritual enclosure and complex thus represent other aspects of the region’s cultural heritage.

Xiongnu history and monastery remains

A large Xiongnu archaeological site was discovered at Yamaan Us in 2022. The site may possibly be the tomb of a noble from the golden line of the Xiongnu shanyu, who may also have been a high-ranking representative of the western half of the empire. Numerous burial groups from the Xiongnu period around Yamaan Us are considered evidence that the area was an important settlement zone. The site thus links an archaeological interpretation with the broader history of early settlement.

Yaruugiin Kherüü Monastery also conveys a sense of the historic scale of religious complexes: it had 17 temple buildings. Individual sections of the earthen walls, two to three metres high, remain along the outer enclosure. The foundations of collapsed sections are three metres wide. These measurements give the historic complex a concrete sense of scale without reducing its history to a mere number of buildings.

Protected area and mountain nature

The strictly protected Otgontenger area includes parts of Aldarkhaan and covers a total of 192,748 hectares. Baruun Saikhan Mountain in Aldarkhaan is designated as a habitat for snow leopards, ibex and forest ungulates. Alongside cultural sites, the landscape and wildlife are therefore also available as distinct themes for trip planning.

A documented outing by students from an environmental club in 2018 followed a three- to four-kilometre walking trail up the mountain to an area frequented by ibex. The description refers to that outing at the time; it also tells of a nature experience in which the journey itself was part of the adventure.

Travel routes and choosing a holiday apartment

A 140-kilometre travel route passes through several stops, including the Daltyn crossing on the Zavkhan River, Khanii Khudgiin Khyasaa, the rest stop at Yamaan Us and Aldarkhaan, before reaching Uliastai. Another route starts from Uliastai and goes via Bogdyn Gol and Mungut Khyasaa. The descriptions provide different reference points for trip planning: one is a series of stops leading to Uliastai, while the other is a route from Uliastai via two named places. Discover Uliastai too.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Aldarkhaan, you can first decide what you want to focus on: cultural sites, Xiongnu history or mountain nature. Then tailor your search to the stops that matter for your plans. The distance of 21 kilometres east of Aldarkhaan refers to Mungut Khyasaa; the 140 kilometres describes a travel route with several stops leading to Uliastai. Before setting off, it is advisable to check current route conditions.
