Bayandelger: Wetlands, Birdlife and History
Accommodation in Bayandelger
In the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve in Bayandelger soum, mountains, steppe, rivers, lakes and wetlands meet. The locally protected area was established in 2003 by Bayandelger’s local parliament and covers about 20,000 hectares. It is divided into a tourism zone, a limited-use zone and a core zone. The landscape offers several thematic highlights to help you plan your trip: bodies of water and birdlife, activities in the protected area, or cultural history.
Nature and Birdlife in the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve
The wetlands of Gun-Galuut are important stopover and breeding grounds for migratory birds, including the white-naped crane. According to a 2026 ecological interview, four pairs breed each year at Lake Ayaga and in the Tsengiin Burd wetland. Tsengiin Burd is a wetland where waterbirds and wetland birds lay their eggs. The description identifies Lake Ayaga as having a greater diversity of bird species than Lake Ikh-Gun. Those interested in birdwatching will find a range of water and wetland habitats within the protected area.
The wider landscape is also diverse: the rocky mountain Baits lies within the nature reserve, and the Kherlen River flows through the area; it is described as one of the longest rivers in Mongolia. The Delberkhii wetland is considered the main water source for Lake Ikh-Gun and Lake Ayaga. A total of 63 mammal species, 81 bird species, three amphibian species and 38 fish species have been recorded in the protected area. At the same time, its flora and fauna have not yet been sufficiently studied. These figures should therefore be understood as the current state of recorded species, not as a complete species list.
A travel description gives the distance to Gun-Galuut as 130 kilometres from Ulaanbaatar, or about two hours by car. This is an approximate guide; the route and road conditions may affect your actual travel plans.
Research Center and Activities
The Gun Galuut Nature Conservation Center is a research, education and information center for the locally protected area in Bayandelger soum, Töv Province. It monitors local biodiversity and provides information to schoolchildren, visitors and tourists. If you are interested in its educational and nature-conservation work, check with the center before your visit for its current arrangements.
Catch-and-release fishing, including taimen fishing, is offered in the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve. Check in advance whether this activity will be available during your trip. Horseback rides are offered at Camp Steppe Nomads in the nature reserve; the camp is located in Bayandelger soum, Töv Province. You should also confirm in advance whether rides are currently available. This will help you plan your trip around whether you would rather focus on the lakes and birdlife or a horseback activity.
Cultural History in Bayandelger
The Bayandelger Cultural Center runs a library and a local history museum. The writer D. Natsagdorj is another point of connection with the area’s cultural history: he was born on November 17, 1906, in Bayandelger soum, Töv Province. A memorial was erected at his birthplace in 1981. These historic sites offer a different focus from the wetlands and wildlife of the nature reserve.
Undur Dov, a ruin site with the remains of a presumed ancient settlement in Bayandelger soum, lies between Lake Ikh-Gun and Lake Ayaga. The surviving ramparts are described as measuring 410 × 420 meters, 1.5 to 1.2 meters high and 4 to 5 meters thick. There is a gate on each of the four sides. Bayandelger therefore offers both nature and culture: the lakes and wetlands define its natural setting, while the memorial and ruin site convey its historical connections.
When looking for a holiday rental, you could first consider which of these reasons for travel matters most to you: the birdlife and waterscapes, activities in the protected area, or cultural history. This makes it easier to explore Bayandelger in a way that suits your interests, while keeping its nature and cultural themes distinct.
