Alag-Erdene: Deer Stones, Rocks and Expansive Landscapes
Accommodation in Alag-Erdene
Alag-Erdene brings together striking deer stone monuments, inscriptions carved into rock, and a landscape of mountains and protected nature. Its cultural sites range from a local history room to distinctive outdoor locations; there are also unusual rock formations and accounts of wildlife and birds. This combination makes the area interesting if you want to experience cultural history and landscapes together on one trip.
Protected Landscape and Travel Character
Khovsgol National Park covers the area of Alag-Erdene and four other soums, extending over 838,070 hectares. It protects the Khuvsgul Lake watershed and aims to develop nature tourism. Alag-Erdene is also on the route taken by domestic and international visitors who come to see Khuvsgul Lake. The region therefore combines a protected landscape with the opportunity to include cultural sites and nature-related interests in your travel plans.
Deer Stones and Cultural Heritage
The Alag-Erdene local history room was established in 2006 to mark the 80th anniversary of the soum. This specific point in local history is connected with the anniversary of the administrative unit. Those interested in cultural history will also find several different monuments and sites, each with its own significance.
The Ulaan Tolgoi deer stone monument in Bag 1 is 3.70 metres high. The site is surrounded by numerous smaller deer stone monuments and large khirgisüürs. Monuments of different sizes and shapes stand together here. Another deer stone monument is also located in Bag 1. At the Shuvuutyn am site, two deer stone monuments are described as significant cultural heritage from the time of the Xiongnu Empire.
Bichigt Khad in Bag 2 offers another form of cultural heritage: inscriptions in traditional Mongolian script are carved into the rocks. Shiree Khad lies on the shore of Lake Erkhel in Bag 1 and has long been revered by the local population. Gal Norov Khad in Bag 1 is considered to be a flame-shaped rock around 2,000 years old; traces of its veneration remain to this day. Inscriptions, monuments and traditional veneration offer different points of interest rather than a single type of cultural site.
Rock Formations and Mountain Landscapes
The natural features also vary considerably. Barchgar Khad is an unusual rock formation on the summit of Mount Barchgar in Bag 2. Ekhyn Umai Khad is a rock formation on the upper reaches of the Ujigiin Gol, also in Bag 2. Elst Mankhan in Bag 5 is known for its distinctive, permanently sand-covered slope. Here, a summit, a river’s upper reaches and a sand-covered mountain slope present different kinds of scenery.
Mount Yargis in Bag 3 is considered scenic and has an abundance of wildlife and birds. This adds a nature-focused feature, with animals and birdlife taking centre stage, to the distinctive rock formations. Together, these details offer several possible focal points for your trip: you can prioritise cultural sites, unusual rock formations or the mountain landscape described here.
Choose Trip Activities and Accommodation
A three-day itinerary for Alag-Erdene includes a boat trip on Khuvsgul Lake and a visit to Duut Spring. It also includes attending the Naadam Festival in July. If these activities are important to your plans, check the itinerary dates and availability in advance.
When choosing a holiday apartment or house, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: deer stone monuments and inscriptions, rocky and mountainous landscapes, or the activities listed in the itinerary. Then match your accommodation’s exact location to the visits you actually plan to make.
