Near the village of Milot, Palace Sans-Souci stands at the foot of the access road to Citadelle Henry, with gardens surrounding the palace. Its location brings together the area’s historical highlights: the Haitian Revolution, a royal residence, and military architecture. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Milot, you can base your choice on whether palace history, the revolutionary background, or the Citadel will be the focus of your stay. This way, you can start planning with the historical topics that interest you rather than with a general idea of accommodation.

Revolution and Military Architecture

The Citadel was built between 1805 and 1820, following the successful Haitian Revolution. In this revolution, the formerly enslaved population of African descent overthrew French colonial rule and declared independence. Citadelle Henry is one of the finest examples of early 19th-century military architecture. The connection between history and architecture makes the Citadel a tangible introduction to the history of revolutionary Haiti.

Palace History and Royal Chapel

Palace Sans-Souci was built as a residence for revolutionary leader Henri Christophe. Christophe became king in 1811, one year after construction of the palace began. The palace’s history is therefore tied both to his role as a revolutionary leader and to his later status as king. The palace and the Citadel offer different historical perspectives: the history of a royal residence and military architecture. In the commune of Milot, Chapelle de l’Immaculée Conception was built between 1810 and 1813, following the instructions of King Henry Christophe. During his rule in the early 19th century, the Church of Milot served as the royal chapel of the Sans-Souci complex.

World Heritage in Its Regional Context

The Church of Milot is part of the World Heritage site National History Park – Citadel, Sans-Souci, Ramiers. The park extends across the three communes of Milot, Dondon, and Plaine-du-Nord in the Nord Department. The sites also differ in geographic scale: the palace is near the village of Milot, the Citadel is in the commune of Milot, and the park spans three communes.

Location and Ascent to the Citadel

Citadelle Henry is in the commune of Milot, at an elevation of 970 m, south of Cap-Haïtien and about an hour’s drive from there. Travel information updated in March 2025 lists a motorcycle taxi, a one- to two-hour walk, or a horse as options for the ascent. As transport conditions may change, check current availability in advance. The time estimates refer to different parts of the journey: the approximate drive is from Cap-Haïtien to the Citadel, while one to two hours is the stated walking time to the summit. Plan for these separately, as the first refers to the drive and the second to the chosen way of ascending.
