Volcanic landscapes and archaeological remains bring different aspects of Guatemala into focus. In the wider region, Volcán Pacaya represents a landscape shaped by recurring eruptions. Across the broader destination of Guatemala, cultural and natural impressions range from Maya sites to tropical habitats. Which of these you want to define your trip is a good starting point for choosing where to stay.

Volcán Pacaya: a landscape in flux

Volcán Pacaya is considered Guatemala’s most active volcano. It includes several relatively young, active peaks and cones, including El Cerro Chino, El Inactivo and El Cono Mackenney. Strong, recurring eruptions have changed the shape of the cone and created a constantly changing landscape. The first eruption occurred approximately 25,000 years ago.

A complex of glowing lava domes stretches along the northwestern slope and forms the park’s main attraction. Different lava flows can be observed from Cerro Chino or the La Meseta plain; what can be observed depends on volcanic conditions. If you are interested in geology and landforms, the peaks, cones and lava domes offer different aspects of an active volcanic area. At the same time, volcanic activity remains changeable.

Archaeology and culture across the broader destination of Guatemala

Guatemala’s archaeological sites offer different insights into Maya history. The ruins of Quirigua preserve 17 monuments carved between 426 and 810 AD. Stelae and carved calendars document social, political and economic events of Maya civilization. You can therefore explore both the monuments and their significance as evidence of a history stretching far back in time.

Antigua Guatemala was founded as Santiago de Guatemala in 1524. The city has preserved its 16th-century layout and most of its architectural heritage. Its many churches and monasteries bear witness to the influence of the Christian Church on every aspect of life during the colonial period. For your trip planning, Antigua therefore offers a different cultural focus from the Maya sites: here, the emphasis is on a preserved historic urban layout and colonial heritage.

Tak'alik Ab'aj spans 1,700 years of history, from 800 BC to 900 AD. During the first half of this period, the transition from Olmec civilization to early Maya culture took place. Archaeological finds include innovative water-management systems; sacred spaces and buildings were designed according to cosmological principles. Today, too, Indigenous groups belonging to 22 different Maya-speaking communities consider Tak'alik Ab'aj a sacred place and visit it for rituals.

Nature and archaeological diversity in Guatemala

Tikal National Park brings together diverse landscapes across 57,600 hectares: wetlands, savanna, and tropical broadleaf and palm forests. Its remarkable wildlife includes five cat species, including jaguars and pumas, several monkey species, anteaters and more than 300 bird species. The inner city area, around 400 hectares in size, includes palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, terraces, and large and small plazas. Nature and archaeological structures therefore exist side by side in the same park, and a visit need not focus on just one of these aspects.

Semuc Champey offers a different experience: you can swim in its terraced natural pools of fresh, turquoise water. Check local conditions before your trip. Comparing the sites can help you clarify your interests: are you mainly looking for archaeological history, diverse landscapes, or a nature experience by the water?

Choose a holiday apartment based on your interests

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding which of these experiences you want your trip to focus on. Volcanic formations, historic cityscapes, Maya archaeology and tropical habitats represent different thematic focuses. Base your accommodation search on the experiences that interest you most. For a visit to the Kaminaljuyú Archaeological Park in the capital, there is an important time-related point to bear in mind: in August 2025, the park was open daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Check visiting hours before your trip.
