Sipacate: Boat Trips and Nature in the Nearby National Park
Accommodation in Sipacate
Sipacate offers two different ways to experience the coast: a boat trip to Aldea Paredón Buena Vista and nature experiences in the nearby Parque Nacional Sipacate-Naranjo. You can reach the village by boat either from Sipacate or from the El Escondite landing. The national park is located in the coastal zone of the municipality of Sipacate in the department of Escuintla. If you are looking for a vacation rental, you can consider whether the boat trip or the nearby national park is the main reason for your visit.
A Coastal Ecosystem in the Nearby National Park
Parque Nacional Sipacate-Naranjo was established in 1969 by government agreement and covers 2,000 hectares. It protects a continuous forested coastal and marine ecosystem that is representative of the mangrove, estuary, and sandy beach areas along Guatemala’s Pacific coast. An estuary is therefore as much a part of the park’s natural landscape as mangroves and sandy beaches. The variety of coastal environments gives the park a distinct natural focus in the vicinity of Sipacate.
Visitors can visit the beaches in the park and travel by boat along the estuary and canal. This means that, alongside a beach visit, waterways are also a tangible part of the nature experience. This is a helpful distinction when planning: you can consider whether you would rather experience the coastal landscape or take a boat trip on the park’s waterways.
Sea Turtles at Poza del Nance
The Pacific green or black sea turtle (Chelonia agassizii or C. mydas agassizii) can be easily observed year-round in Parque Nacional Sipacate-Naranjo, especially at Poza del Nance. The turtles enter the estuary. Pacific black sea turtles and parlama turtles also arrive at Poza del Nance each year.
Two different time frames therefore apply to wildlife viewing: green or black sea turtles can be observed year-round, while Pacific black and parlama turtles arrive annually. Both are associated with Poza del Nance, one of the specific natural sites in the nearby national park.
A Boat Trip or National Park as the Reason for Your Visit
You can use your planned activities to help choose where to stay. If you want to include a boat trip to Aldea Paredón Buena Vista, Sipacate is one of the departure points mentioned; alternatively, the trip begins at the El Escondite landing. If you are mainly interested in the beaches, coastal ecosystems, or turtles, these nature experiences are found in the nearby national park. When looking for a vacation rental in Sipacate, you can therefore weigh whether the boat trip from town or a visit to the park will play a bigger part in your stay. The trip to the village and boating along the estuary and canal in the park are two different kinds of boat experience.
