Trails and nature experiences
The marked “Royal Ridge” trail is a 16-kilometre circular route. It starts in Manglisi, passes through Martalkhevi, where there is a picnic area, and continues to the village of Didi Namtvriani before returning to Manglisi along the “Royal Ridge”. This gives you a concrete way to make a hiking route one of your main interests when planning your trip.
Algeti National Park has five ecotourism routes, including horse-riding and hiking trails. One striking natural landmark is the 900-year-old mountain oak, known as the “Patriarch Oak”. The park’s visitor centre also has a rope course, with a family zone featuring 10 obstacles and a youth zone featuring 14. The different names and obstacle counts can help you consider the rope course as a separate activity alongside hiking or horse-riding plans.
Archaeology, architecture and churches
Samshvilde is a focus for archaeology: its ruins, often called “Orbisa Fortress”, are considered among the oldest ruins in the Caucasus region. Excavations have uncovered 22 monuments from the Chalcolithic, Late Bronze Age, Hellenistic and medieval periods. This range of eras makes Samshvilde an interesting choice if you would like to explore different historical periods during your stay.
Dmanisi, too, looks far back into the past. Among the oldest finds at the archaeological site are Stone Age tools, some of which are 1.8 million years old. Compared with the monuments at Samshvilde, they show how different periods shape the archaeological themes of Kvemo Kartli.
Bolnisi’s German Quarter is the oldest part of Katarinenfeld. Its surviving houses combine Georgian wooden balconies with German half-timbered architecture, along with high attic floors and deep cellars. The Bolnisi Museum adds another architectural perspective with its local history exhibition on human development from the Eneolithic to the Middle Ages. In Bolnisi, architectural styles and a long cultural history sit side by side.
At Manglisi Sioni, architectural history meets religious significance. The present-day church includes a building phase from the 5th century and another from the 11th century. A fragment of the True Cross, an important Christian relic, is also kept there.
