Terjola: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Terjola is located in the lowlands of western Georgia, in Imereti, on the right bank of the Chkhara River. The visitor attractions offered by Terjola Municipality include forests, waterfalls and karst caves.

Landscape and Location

Terjola lies on the Tbilisi–Zestafoni main road. The Terjola–Tkibuli and Kutaisi–Vartsikhe roads, which are of national significance, also run through the town. Terjola was granted town status in 1983 and is first mentioned in the 17th century. Terjola Municipality features Colchian vegetation; its forests include oaks, beeches, linden trees, Caucasian zelkovas, box trees, willows and mulberry trees.

Culture and History

Nearby, Dedagvtisa in Gvankiti is a historical monument dating from the 12th century. In Terjola Municipality, visitors can see the David and Sergo Kldiashvili Museum and the Shalva and Petre Amiranashvili Museum. The municipality contains Stone Age caves, medieval fortresses and churches. Seven dinosaur footprints have been preserved near Kadagidze Rafi.

Pilgrims visit St George's Church in Gogni on 6 May and 23 November. The church has no doors and welcomes believers at any time. The David Kldiashvili House Museum contains the writer's manuscripts, as well as photographic and documentary materials, furniture, crockery, clothing and his deathbed. The municipality also has three theatres, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions.

Nature and Trails

Nearby is the Navenakhevi Cave in Imereti, a karst cave with four chambers on two levels, limestone stalactites and stalagmites, and a seven-metre-high stalagmite at the exit. A visit can be combined with nearby educational facilities, cafés and forest paths. The cave has parking, a visitor centre, a cafeteria, an amphitheatre and attractions for children. An asphalt road can be used to reach Navenakhevi Cave by car.

Nearby, Kadagidze Rafi is a four-metre-high waterfall in the Dzusa Gorge near Sazano. When water levels are low in summer, the entrance to a 25-metre-long cave may become visible. Mujireti Cave can be accessed via a village road reachable by car and then along a 200-metre path. It has a main passage and short branches in an upper limestone layer.

A certified guide and special equipment are required to visit Dzevri Cave. An excursion to Sakazhia Cave requires permission from the administration of the Imereti Caves Protected Areas.

Wine and Cuisine

Makaridze Winery in Terjola continues a family winemaking tradition and has planted vines of the Otskhanuri Sapere variety. The winery uses qvevris in its family wine cellar. In Terjola, Makaridze Winery offers wine sales and tastings; booking is required for a tasting.

In Imereti, Terjola is one of the towns associated with Pullet in Isrim-Makvali sauce.
