Zbarazh: Castle, Churches and History
Accommodation in Zbarazh
The 17th-century Zbarazh Castle occupies a central place in the State Historical and Architectural Reserve. Founded on 8 February 1994, the reserve also includes the Transfiguration Church and the Bernardine Monastery complex. In Zbarazh, you can explore the town’s history through castle architecture, religious buildings and exhibitions.
Castle and Exhibitions
The main castle of the National Reserve has more than 35 exhibition halls, with permanent exhibitions on archaeology, ethnography, regional crafts, weapons, sacred art and numismatics. There is also an organ hall. The wide range of themes spans archaeological and ethnographic perspectives, crafts, religious art and coin collecting. This gives you the opportunity to explore cultural history not only through the architecture, but also through a variety of collections and exhibition themes.
An exhibition on weapons displays original edged and firearms as well as warriors’ body armor. This focus adds concrete examples of historical weapons and armor to the other permanent exhibitions.
Since its founding, the reserve has developed scholarly, collection-related, exhibition and excursion activities. This gives your trip a cultural focus that brings together buildings, collections and various historical themes.
Routes with Different Themes
In 2023, the municipal tourism website published a 2 km tourist route titled “Zbarazh – The City of Ida Fink.” It also lists an excursion to the New Jewish Cemetery. The local offerings therefore include a route with a specific theme and a separate excursion destination.
The religious pilgrimage route “Sacred Zbarazh” is 3.2 km long. It passes the Church of the Savior, a Way of the Cross, St. Anthony’s Church, the Church of the Dormition, the Resurrection Church and Christian cemeteries. Compared with the 2 km route, it is 1.2 km longer and offers a different thematic focus through its sacred sites. When planning, you can weigh up the stated distances and the different content of the routes.
The municipal tourism information was published in 2023. Check current route information and whether the cemetery excursion is available before making your plans.
Churches and Monastery History
The Transfiguration Church in Zbarazh is also part of the reserve and was built in 1600. It is classified as a fortified church, and its foundation inscription also gives the year 1600. Alongside the castle, another historic building with a clearly stated date is therefore a central landmark.
The Bernardine Monastery complex comprises three separate cultural heritage sites of national significance: St. Anthony’s Church in New Zbarazh, protection number 662/1; the monastery cells (662/2); and the bell tower (662/3). The separate protection numbers distinguish the three parts of the ensemble, while all three belong to the monastery complex.
Another part of the local history concerns New Zbarazh: construction of the first church began there in the spring of 1628, at the foot of a small hill near the Hnizna River. In the early 17th century, Janusz Mykolaiovych initiated the arrival of the then-popular Bernardine Order in Zbarazh. This was in gratitude for its members’ service as chaplains in the troops of the Princes of Zbarazh. These historical details give the monastery ensemble its own place in the town’s timeline.
