Kharkiv: Culture, Archaeology and Park Experiences
Accommodation in Kharkiv
Kharkiv’s range of themes spans archaeological and natural history collections, literary history, and hands-on activities and children’s attractions in the park. The city offers different ways to explore these interests: some lead to historical collections, others to natural history or activities for children.
Collections with a range of subjects
The Archaeological Museum of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University holds significant collections of objects from the Bronze Age, the Scythian period, antiquity, and the Chernyakhov and Saltovo cultures. The different periods and cultures give the collections several specific historical points of reference. For travellers interested in archaeology, the scope extends beyond any single period.
The Natural History Museum takes a different approach: its scientific collections comprise more than 250,000 exhibits from around the world. The exhibitions are spread across 23 halls; four departments focus on geology, invertebrates and vertebrates, the evolution of the organic world, and nature conservation. The worldwide origins of the exhibits and the clearly defined subject areas provide two different ways to explore natural history.
The Kharkiv Literary Museum’s major collections include artefacts from the Executed Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, the Sixtiers movement, the Ukrainian resistance movement of the 1960s to 1980s, and the early 1990s. This distinguishes the museum’s focus from archaeological and natural history topics: here, artefacts from literary and cultural movements across several decades take centre stage.
Another cultural point of interest is Derzhprom, recognised as a cultural monument of national importance. Alongside the collections, it offers a named monument as a separate point of reference when planning a trip.
Hands-on activities and park attractions
At Dino Park in M. Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation, visitors can dig for hidden skeletons of prehistoric reptiles free of charge. Unlike scientific collections, the focus here is on searching for yourself. The activity combines a specific theme with a hands-on experience.
The children’s entertainment centre at the Medieval Square offers children mazes, slides, a climbing wall, shooting galleries, arcade games and other entertainment all year round. The Medieval Square is also the park’s main venue for celebrations, festivals, discos and public festivities. The activities cater to different interests: getting involved, planning entertainment for children, or considering the park as an event venue.
The park’s Ferris wheel is 55 metres high. The operator’s website currently reports that the park is temporarily closed. Check with the operator before making plans to confirm access to the attractions mentioned.
Getting your bearings and finding a holiday apartment
Kharkiv is currently home to the only tourist information centre in eastern Ukraine that is in operation. If you plan to use the centre to get your bearings, check its current operating status in advance.
When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which interests you want to shape your stay: cultural and historical collections, natural history, or park attractions specifically aimed at children. This way, your search reflects your actual travel plans and the topics that matter to you in Kharkiv.
