Verkhnii Yaseniv: Hutsul Culture and Routes
Accommodation in Verkhnii Yaseniv
Verkhnii Yaseniv brings together Hutsul culture and village history with marked trails that feature the village in different ways. Mlynskyi Waterfall is located at a tourist site in the village. Two museums showcase different aspects of cultural life; there is also a wooden Church of the Holy Trinity and a folk festival celebrated annually in late June. For planning your trip, it is especially helpful to understand the differences between a cycling route that passes through the village and a hiking route that ends in Verkhnii Yaseniv.
Museums spanning clothing and local history
The “Hutsulske Riznobarvia” Museum displays Hutsul silver jewelry, Gerda ornaments, necklaces, old coins, and embroidery. Visitors can view and try on traditional Hutsul clothing for men and women. The first room also features copies of miraculous icons from various monasteries in Ukraine, as well as prayer beads from Medjugorje. The third room opens onto a spacious terrace overlooking Pysanyi Kamin. The exhibits thus offer a glimpse of everything from jewelry and textiles to religious artifacts, along with a view of the named peak. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.
The Museum of the History of Verkhnii Yaseniv Village focuses on a different subject: the history, culture, and way of life of the village. The collection includes historical photographs and Hutsul household items. A map shows places visited and routes taken by Lesya Ukrainka and Ivan Franko in the Verkhovyna region. The museum opened in 2021 with public funding and support from the Verkhovynskyi National Park. While one museum focuses on Hutsul jewelry, clothing, and other exhibits, the other traces the village’s history and regional context.
Church, memorial cross, and folklore
The wooden Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1882 and is considered a village landmark. Beside the church stands a memorial cross commemorating the abolition of serfdom.
The “Polonynske Lito” folk festival is also part of the village’s tradition: it is celebrated annually in late June. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
A cycling route through the village, a hike ending here
The signposted “Hutsul Villages” cycling route starts in Verkhovyna and passes through Kryvorivnia, Verkhnii Yaseniv, Rivnia, Vyhoda, Krasnoillia, and Zamahora before returning to Verkhovyna. The route is 37 km long. Verkhnii Yaseniv lies along the way; both the start and finish are in Verkhovyna.
The signposted 24-km hiking route follows a different course: it starts in Kryvorivnia and ends in Verkhnii Yaseniv. Along the way, it passes over Mount Ihrets (1,312 m), Bukovets Pass, Mount Kopylash (1,150 m), and Pysanyi Kamin Peak (1,221 m). The two routes therefore differ both in activity and in the role of the village: Verkhnii Yaseniv is along the way on the cycling route, while it is the destination of the hike.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Verkhnii Yaseniv, you can choose one that suits your travel plans: culture and village history, the folk festival in late June, or one of the signposted routes. The difference in the village’s role on the two routes is especially clear: the cycling route passes through, while the hike ends here.
