Holiday apartment in Wiesendangen: Museum, church and regional discoveries

In Wiesendangen, a listed castle tower, late medieval frescoes and an offered circular route come together. Between local history, ecclesiastical art, regional castles and distinctive elevations, a varied picture of the village and its surroundings emerges.

Culture

The Wiesendangen Local Museum is located in the castle tower, built in 1120 and protected under Swiss federal heritage conservation. Exhibits include Renaissance furniture, a heraldic stained-glass panel from 1621, photographs, firefighting equipment, weapons, as well as furniture and everyday objects from the Renaissance and Biedermeier periods. The exhibition also features a tiled stove made by Elgg potter Spiller in 1782, tools and equipment from various trades, the production of stencilled tiles, a kitchen from around the turn of the century, and the process from flax to finished clothing.

The museum also includes a 17th-century Spycher, a traditional storage building. An agricultural exhibition there focuses on viticulture, meadow and arable farming, and forestry. The museum in the castle is open from 2 to 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month except August. From May to October, the Spycher can be visited at the same time on the first Sunday of every month except August.

Wiesendangen Church also preserves an important piece of local history: its chancel contains late medieval frescoes of significance beyond the region. Private guided tours of the church can be arranged for groups, families and clubs. Concerts are also held there regularly, both during and outside church services. A visit to Wiesendangen Church can be arranged at short notice for Saturday during the day or for Sunday after the service.

Getting around

Wiesendangen is connected to S-Bahn lines S8 and S30. The station is located somewhat outside the village centre. The station’s location is therefore also one of the specific characteristics of the village that can be taken into account when planning a stay.

The Bertschikon–Wiesendangen circular route was offered for hiking, walking, strolling and cycling. The start at Wiesendangen Castle was scheduled for 10 a.m.; individual start times were then possible. Along the way, refreshment stations were available at Wiesendangen Castle, in Gündlikon and in Menzengrüt.
