Culture and History
Today’s village of Wattwil was first documented in records from the year 897 under the name “Wattinwilare”; these records link it to property belonging to St. Gallen Abbey and payments to St. Andrew’s Church.
Iberg Castle was built around 1230, destroyed during the Appenzell Wars and rebuilt in 1408. Until 1805, it served as the seat of the bailiffs of the Prince-Abbey.

Wattwil is a hub for rail and road connections between St. Gallen and Rapperswil, as well as between Wil and Nesslau.
