Rüttenen lies at an elevation of 516 metres above sea level in a widening of the Verenabach valley, before the Verenabach enters the Verena Gorge, at the southern foot of the Jura and at the foot of the Weissenstein.
The municipality includes part of the southern Jura slope; south of Rüttenen, the Verenabach cuts through the Verena range in a gorge.
The terrain of Rüttenen extends northwards over Oberrüttenen and a rocky steep slope towards Balmfluhchöpfli and Röti. At 1,395 metres above sea level, Röti is the highest point in the municipality.
Rüttenen lies approximately 2.5 kilometres north of Solothurn as the crow flies.
