Culture

The late Gothic Church of St. Margarethen in Ilanz is part of the town’s history. It contains richly painted panels with Early Renaissance motifs as well as a unique depiction of the Dance of Death. In this church, the religious disputation of 1526 preceded Ilanz’s adoption of the Reformed faith.

The ground floor of the Obertor in Ilanz, also known in Romansh as Porta Sura, dates from 1513 and forms the historic entrance to the town. The upper structure of the Obertor was built in 1717 and displays the coats of arms of the Three Leagues. The Ecktürmli of Ilanz and its loopholes are also part of a Baroque fortification built between 1715 and 1717.

The Museum Regiunal Surselva offers insights into the history, crafts, and traditions of the region. All exhibition rooms in the museum, as well as the sanitary facilities on the ground floor, are wheelchair-accessible. Individual opening hours and guided tours can be arranged with the museum for groups. Another historical feature is the oxygen factory in Ilanz: it is the last surviving facility of its kind in Switzerland.

Local Life

The Ilanz weekly market offers fresh local products directly from the producers. Visitors also have the opportunity to talk directly with farmers there.

Getting Around

Ilanz can be reached by the Rhaetian Railway from both Chur and Disentis/Mustér. Route 656 Trans Ruinaulta can be shortened by taking the Rhaetian Railway or the Rhine Gorge/Ruinaulta bus.
