Vargön combines nature experiences with surprising insights into the landscape and geological history. Halle and Hunneberg can be reached from Vargön. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Vargön can therefore consider the town as a starting point for a variety of holiday activities: the mountains offer cycle paths, guided activities and historical traces, while lakes, wetlands and a waterfall open up further opportunities to experience nature.

Halle and Hunneberg as a Natural Area

The mountains of Halle and Hunneberg consist of sandstone, alum shale and diabase. The Halle and Hunneberg Ecopark has three cycle paths maintained by OK Skogsvargarna and Hunneberg Sport- och Motionsklubb. Anyone who wants to explore the area on two wheels will therefore find several designated options here. A path leads from Halleberg’s ancient hillfort to the dramatic Ättestupa. The historic starting point and distinctive route connection give the nature experience an additional cultural and historical dimension.

The landscape in the wider surroundings of Vargön also reveals a variety of facets. Öjemossarna is a 400-hectare wetland with several hundred forested islands. The 36-metre-high Skäktefallet waterfall, also called Brudslöjan, is likewise located in the wider area, at the foot of Halleberg. These destinations are suitable for an itinerary in which you can alternate between cycling, observing the landscape and seeking out distinctive natural features.

Lakes, Guided Experiences and Wildlife Observation

At Lake Hallsjön on Halleberg, guided fishing is offered with equipment provided. There is also put-and-take fishing with rainbow trout stocked continuously. You can go canoeing on Eldmörjan; the lake is just a short walk from the visitor centre. If you would rather be accompanied by an expert, you can take part in a guided hike on Hunneberg and learn about animals and nature along the way. Guided forest bathing sessions are also offered in the forest.

A particular focus is placed on beaver safaris. Two beaver safaris depart after Midsummer from the Besökscenter Destination HalleHunneberg in Bergagården: a canoe tour on Mondays and a tour by wagon and on foot on Wednesdays. Both last approximately 3–4 hours.

Geology and Practical Orientation

At the visitor centre and museum, the geological history of Halle and Hunneberg is presented through the fossil Grapto. There are also cavities at several locations on Halle and Hunneberg. They are remnants of ancient limestone caves from the 18th century, where limestone and shale were extracted. This means that a trip to the mountains can combine physical activity with a look at the formation and use of the landscape.

For practical orientation in Vargön, there are toilets at Nordkroken. Hittaut Vänersborg/Vargön is available around the clock during the summer season. From the Karten bus stop in Vargön, it is approximately 1.8 km to Bergagården. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation, these local reference points may play a role in planning your days. What matters most is which combination of cycle paths, water, guided experiences and geological history you prefer for your trip.
