Flötenmarksen leads into a landscape where waterways, marshes, spruce forests and traces of earlier land use are closely interconnected. Anyone wishing to combine a trip with experiences of nature and cultural history will find a variety of options for planning each day: hikes along the Hällekasleden, insights into a cultural landscape shaped over centuries, and impressions from the Kynnefjäll area.

Between spruce forests, marshes and waterways

Flötemarksön is part of Flötemarken and is surrounded by Kornsjön as well as several rivers and waterways, including the Kynne älv. The outflow from the Kornsjöarna lake system runs south of Flötemarksön partly through the Kynne älv and, farther north, also through a smaller watercourse. The outflow from the large lake system forms beautiful rapids. These different waterscapes give the area a distinct character of its own, without requiring you to devote your days to a single activity.

The Hällekasleden passes through deep spruce forests and across remote marshes. Some sections run along the Kynne älv. One stage of the Bohusleden begins in the heart of Kynnefjäll and is considered a wilderness hike. North of Flötemarken, a hiking route connects to the Bohusleden. For families with different interests, this can provide a good basis for combining active hiking days with quieter exploration of the landscape.

Cultural landscape with a long history

Flötemarksön and the surrounding cultural landscape are of national interest for cultural heritage conservation under Chapter 3, Section 6 of the Swedish Environmental Code. Flötemarken was already an established farm in the 16th century. As early as 1658, there were two sawmills and a mill in the waterways around Flötemarksön. The history can therefore be read not only in individual buildings, but also in the relationship between agriculture, water and forest.

The small-scale cultural landscape around the torps is kept open through mowing and grazing. The torp sites near Flötemarksön are an example of the expansion of torps in forest and mountain areas during the 19th century. An older barn has been preserved on Gräsön; at Holmen, an older dwelling house and outbuildings remain. Such details give a hike or landscape exploration a historical context, even if you focus your trip entirely on nature and outdoor activities.

Planning hikes and finding suitable accommodation

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Flötenmarksen, it is worth first deciding what kind of trip you want. If you are primarily interested in experiencing forests, marshes and waterways, the stages of the Hällekasleden and the landscape along the Kynne älv can form the focus of your stay. If you are more interested in regional history, Flötemarken, the torp sites and the preserved buildings offer additional topics to include in your plans.

When hiking in the immediate area, be aware that the stage between Flötemarksön and Porsås is not marked throughout. On the section between the Holmen bridge and National Road 164, hikers must navigate using a map and compass. One stage destination borders a public road; at the bridge approximately 300 metres to the east, there are a few parking spaces. This information will help you coordinate your accommodation and daily activities objectively, without reducing the landscape to a single route.
