Kungshamn: Coast, Culture and Island Experiences
Accommodation in Kungshamn
Kungshamn combines a coastal getaway, a fascinating local history and excursions on the water. You can spend the day at rocky bathing spots and the sandy beach, plan a stage of the Kuststigen trail or explore the history of the church and harbour. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your holiday: swimming and parks, hiking, culture or boating experiences.
Between the bathing spot, park and coastal trail
Tången bathing spot offers several ways to enjoy the water: rocky bathing spots with a sandy beach, jetties with bathing ladders and an accessible ramp. This allows you to enjoy your time by the water in different ways, without having to follow a specific programme for the entire day. At Tångenparken, you will find lawns, plantings, a playground and a converted stage. Those travelling with children can include the park as a separate point in their day; groups comprising different age ranges have another option besides the beach and excursions.
For hiking enthusiasts, the Kungshamn–Tullboden stage of the Kuststigen trail is a specific point of reference. Kungshamn bus station is approximately 800 metres from the starting point of this stage. You can take this approximate distance into account when planning your day and choosing your accommodation. It describes the route to the start of the stage, not the distance to every holiday apartment in the town.
Church History and Local Culture
Kungshamns kyrka reflects several phases in the town’s development. Kungshamn received its first church in 1780, after strong population growth during the herring period had made the mother church in Askum too small. The first red-painted wooden church was named Gustav Adolphs Capell and stood in the old cemetery; today, a memorial stone commemorates it there. The present stone church, Kungshamns kyrka, was consecrated in 1904 after the former wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1901.
Other cultural attractions also give your stay a local perspective. Since 1957, Mollbrinks has presented art exhibitions in Kungshamn every summer. The gallery of Tångenpirens Konst & Hantverk displays works in various techniques by seven artists. The shop is located in an authentic harbour setting on Fisketången. Gerlegården complements this selection as one of the few surviving 18th-century merchants’ houses in Bohuslän. Anyone interested in living traditions can also learn about the work of Sotenäs Folkdansgille, founded in 1975, which performs group and couple dances of different geographical origins and with roots in different periods.
Boat Trips from Kungshamn
Hållöexpressen departs for the island of Hållö from Bäckevikstorget in the centre of Kungshamn. The M/S Missouri has room for 53 passengers. In summer, there is also a connection with Zitabåtarna, which operates from the harbour in Kungshamn to Smögenbryggan approximately every half hour. This makes a stay appealing for travel plans that combine set days on land with excursions on the water. Zitabåtarna also organises customised charter trips and offers mackerel fishing in late summer and autumn.
A bookable study visit to Sotenäs Symbioscentrum can also be a special addition. This allows you to create varied holiday days without committing to just one type of experience. Find more ideas for places to visit at Örn, Smögen, Bovallstrand, Hovenäset, Bohus-Malmön and Hunnebostrand. This allows you to compare which destination best suits your planned coastal, cultural and water-based experiences.
