Tidan – Culture, History and Special Excursion Destinations

Tidan combines local history, unusual visitor attractions and nature-oriented excursions into a destination with many different facets. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can shape their stay according to their own interests: culture and industrial history are just as much an option as historic traces in the landscape, a tourist route, garden railways or summer music events.

Local History Along the River Tidan

A good starting point for exploring the town’s history is Vallby Sörgården. The well-preserved farmstead dates from the 19th century. In and around the Vallby Sörgården cultural reserve, you can also find a runestone, remnants of roads and several Iron Age graves. These traces indicate that the area has been used since prehistoric times and give a visit a historical dimension, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single museum.

The River Tidan also played a role in the town’s development. Historically, it was an important source of energy for mills, power stations and the textile industry. Yllefabriken was founded in 1910. Centralföreningen houses a craft and gift shop, an art gallery and a museum. Old light motorcycles are also displayed there. This makes it possible to view local history through a range of different subjects: crafts, art, technology and the industrial past.

Historic Destinations and Landscapes in the Nearby Area

Near Tidan lies the Askeberga ship setting, Sweden’s second-largest ship setting. The site consists of 24 lumpy stones, approximately two metres high, arranged in an oval 55 metres long and 18 metres wide. Those interested in older cultural traces will find a destination here with clear, unusual forms.

Lake Östen provides a different focus. In the vicinity of Tidan, it is a Ramsar wetland of international importance. This creates an opportunity to alternate between cultural-historical sightseeing and experiences of the landscape when planning your trip. Also nearby, Vaholms Brohus crosses the River Tidan as a covered bridge. It is presumably the only bridge of its kind in Sweden. This cautious wording is part of the special character of the structure and should be retained when planning your own excursion.

Routes, Parks and Special Visiting Days

Kulturväg Skaraborg is a tourist route where you can independently experience historic sites and enjoy impressive natural scenery. Kulturväg Skaraborg ends in Tidan and is signposted with brown-and-white signs in the wider regional area. Tidan is therefore also suitable as a base for a trip in which individual excursion destinations are discovered not only within the town but also along a themed route.

Vävareparken has a lit and newly resurfaced fitness trail. The park also includes a redesign of the historic manager’s garden with additional plants. Those looking for a quieter part of the programme between sightseeing stops can plan this park as a separate part of the day.

An unusual visitor attraction is Bennys Trädgårdsjärnväg. The miniature garden railway is one of the largest garden railways in Sweden and has a track gauge, or scale, of 2:22.5. Special visiting times apply: twice a year, there are open visiting days during the Art and Culture Days and the harvest festival around Lake Östen. Outside these dates, visits are possible by telephone appointment.

Summer Entertainment and Local Atmosphere

In summer, Olstorps Festplats offers live music experiences with current party bands and artists. The site includes a separate Buggbana for dancing in a folk-park setting. Club Veboá is also located there, an open-air disco at Olstorps Festplats in Tidan. These offerings appeal to a different side of the town than the historic destinations and can add an evening focus to your travel plans.

For a break with a strong sense of period atmosphere, there is Österbergs Konditori in Tidan. An atmosphere from the 1950s is preserved there. Those who want to experience local history not only through buildings and museums but also through everyday culture will find a fitting additional highlight here.

Also note when planning your trip that Tidanbadet has been closed for renovation work since 2023. It should therefore not be included in your travel plans as an available outdoor swimming pool.
