Gullholmen is one of the most densely built-up coastal communities in Bohuslän. Narrow passages and lanes lead between the houses down to the water, giving the place its distinctive character. If you are looking for a combination of maritime history, museums and nature for your holiday, you can combine a variety of discoveries here.

Between Lanes and Maritime History

Gullholmen is of national cultural and historical interest. At Skepparhuset, you can learn about the history of a family who lived there during Gullholmen’s heyday. The intact sailmaker’s workshop is particularly vivid, with sails from Albert’s own cutters, Xantho and Harold. Stenstugan also takes you back into the past: the house was built in 1832, is one of the oldest houses on Gullholmen and is now the only surviving building of its kind on Gullholmen. The museum displays old household items and furniture.

The Gullholmen Art Museum offers further insights. It displays works by around 70 artists whose subjects have a particular connection to Gullholmen. The museum also aims to give future generations insights into the lives of artists on Gullholmen over a period of 100 years through a selected collection of paintings. Gullholmen Church is also part of the historical context: it was completed in autumn 1799 on Lilla Hermanö, in a sheltered valley. Its altarpiece, installed in 1828, was probably created by a Dutch artist.

Härmanö, Routes and Nature Experiences

Several paths and roads lead from Gullholmen to Härmanö. Härmanö Nature Reserve encompasses rocky cliffs, heathland, deciduous vegetation, meadows and pastures, offering a wide variety of landscapes. On Härmanö, some of the marked routes have been adapted for wheelchair users. This is a specific factor to consider when planning if you would like to choose suitably designed paths for a shared outing.

One route leads to Skållehus, where settlement remains from the 16th century have been preserved. This allows you to combine a stay in nature with a historical destination, without viewing the landscape solely from a sporting perspective. For a quieter museum visit, the Gullholmen Nature and Bird Museum displays 150 birds, more than 10 mammals and several marine organisms. This means that Gullholmen offers a choice of both cultural and historical collections and natural history topics.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Gullholmen, you can first consider what combination you want to shape your holiday. Someone who wants to focus on the local history, lanes and museums will plan differently from someone who wants to include routes to Härmanö, landscapes and Skållehus. The ferry between Tuvesvik and Käringön, which stops year-round at the Gullholmen Hamnen and Gullholmen Piren jetties, is an important part of planning your journey. This allows you to choose your accommodation according to the experiences you want and your own daily rhythm.
