Hyssna combines diverse landscapes with historic sites and special trails for hikers and cyclists. The area is ideal for a trip where you can combine nature observation, culture and active days. Depending on your interests, you can include the 40-kilometre Hyssnaleden trail, the Stoms ås nature reserve, historic sites or the Hyssnaturen cycling route in your plans.

Hiking between the church, forest and viewpoints

The Hyssnaleden trail is 40 kilometres long and is suitable for a two-day hike. Hyssna gamla kyrka is considered a recommended starting point, and parking is also available there. The church dates from the 12th century and is a white-plastered stone church with a rectangular nave, a rounded chancel, a sacristy on the eastern side and a tower on the western side. This means the hike begins at a place that is itself part of Hyssna’s history.

The Stoms ås nature reserve lies southeast of Hyssna. An old beech forest shapes a varied, hilly landscape there. The forest is home to many rare mosses and lichens. The Hyssna local heritage association has set up information signs, paths and rest areas in the Stoms ås area. For planning your day, this offers a practical way to combine a longer hike with nature observation and breaks. In the immediate surroundings of the destination, the viewpoint on Torberg offers views across the agricultural landscape of the Surtan Valley.

Cultural and historical sites along the way

Hyssna also offers notable cultural and historical destinations away from the main hiking route. Lockö Kvarn is located along the Hyssnaleden trail. The mill was built in 1863, while its oldest section dates from the 18th century. Those interested in historic buildings and regional development can see traces of different periods in one place here.

The Hyssna Hembygdsmuseum is located on an island in the Surtan River. Melltorp Saw is a living history museum. Its mechanical frame saw is particularly striking: it is unique and one of very few of its kind in western Sweden. Melltorps radby has also preserved the character of an undivided village; the area is of great cultural and historical value. If you want to bring together different interests within your family, these historic stops can be alternated with hiking or nature days.

Cycling route, natural features and water experiences

Hyssnaturen is a good choice for a cycling trip. The cycling route is 38 kilometres long and follows roads around Kinna, Rydal and Hyssna.

Among the unusual natural destinations is Torkels gömma, a small, narrow cave in a deep spruce forest with steep slopes and large boulders. In the vicinity of Hyssna, at the western end of Lilla Hålsjön, there is a small bathing area with jetties, a grassy sunbathing area and a sandy beach. The Liagärde nature reserve extends around an impressive mountain summit; from there, the view stretches far across Stora Hålsjön.

Hyssna as the starting point for your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to make a clear decision about the pace of travel you want. The Hyssnaleden represents a longer hike, Stoms ås stands for forest and nature observation, Hyssnaturen offers a 38-kilometre cycling tour, and the historic sites are suitable for culture-focused excursions. Skafferiet i Hyssna provides a culinary addition: its own kitchen produces a range of jams, preserves, jellies, juices, meal drinks, syrup, vinegar and spices.
