Discover Kungälv: Fortress, Wooden Town and Nature
Accommodation in Kungälv
Kungälv combines impressive history with nature close to the town and a wide range of opportunities for days devoted to culture and outdoor activities. Bohus Fortress is considered the town’s landmark. Other highlights include the historic wooden town centre, the historic Kungälv Church, Mimers Kulturhus and Fontin Nature Reserve. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus on culture, short walks or longer experiences in nature.
Fortress, Wooden Town and Historic Traces
Bohus Fortress is regarded as a symbol and landmark of Kungälv. The fortress also offers one-hour historical group tours with a guide dressed in medieval clothing. This makes it possible to turn a visit into a particularly vivid history lesson. Fästningsparken is located on the remains of the former town of Ny-Kungälv, next to the 14th-century fortress. Anyone interested in the development of the area will find two closely connected historical points of reference here.
The older town centre also forms part of Kungälv’s distinctive character. It is a well-preserved wooden town district and is of national interest for cultural heritage conservation. The gravestones at Västra kyrkogården provide insight into the history of Kungälv. Kungälv Church is another cultural and historical focal point: the Baroque wooden church was built from 1679 onwards and features paintings on its vaulted wooden ceiling created by the Gothenburg painter Erik Eriksson Grijs in the late 1690s.
Culture House and Fika as a Relaxed Part of the Day
Mimers Kulturhus complements the historic attractions with a diverse cultural programme. It houses a library, an art gallery and a theatre. Mimers Kulturhus can be reached on foot from the Kungälv travel centre in about 10 minutes. At Mimers café, you can enjoy fika or have a light meal; tickets for some events at Mimers Kulturhus are also sold there. This allows you to extend a cultural outing with a break and a small culinary stop.
For your travel planning, this combination of historic places and a culture house is interesting because you can keep the rhythm of your days flexible: one day can be devoted entirely to the fortress and the town’s history, while another can focus on an exhibition, a theatre visit or fika.
Fontin: Nature Directly Beside the Built-Up Area
Fontin Nature Reserve is directly adjacent to the built-up area of Kungälv and is an important recreational area close to town. Its landscape includes coniferous forest, mixed forest, alder swamp, beech forest, other deciduous forest and pastureland. As a result, Fontin offers different natural landscapes within a compact area, without this implying a particular length or difficulty for every individual route.
There are five signposted hiking and exercise loops at Fontin. They are 900 metres, 1,250 metres, 2.5 kilometres, 5 kilometres and 10 kilometres long. This range helps you take your preferred distance for the day into account when planning. Fontin is also a suitable starting point for the Bohusleden for longer hikes. The long-distance trail is 370 kilometres long and runs between Lindome and Strömstad; two of its 27 stages pass through Kungälv Municipality.
From the centre of Kungälv, you can reach Kastalaparken on foot in about 10 minutes. The route heads westwards along Kongahällagatan via the Stadspromenaden path. This specific walk can also complement your travel plans if, in addition to the major cultural attractions, you would like to include a shorter period of exercise. Stora Smällen at Västra Porten in Ytterby is also located within the municipality, an Iron Age burial ground with 160 archaeological monuments.
Choose Kungälv as Your Base
Kungälv is suitable for a trip where you do not want to reduce historic discoveries, culture and nature to a single holiday theme. When searching for a holiday apartment, first decide whether the fortress, wooden town and churches should be the main focus, or whether you would like to allow more time for Fontin and the Bohusleden. For outings of different lengths, you have both the short 900-metre loop and the 10-kilometre circuit available. This allows you to adapt your daily itinerary to your interests and preferred pace without losing sight of the town’s history.
If you would then like to compare other places in the same area, you can find Kärna, Romelanda, Tjuvkil, Kode, Kovikshamn, Marstrand and Harestad here.
