Götene lies on the plain southeast of Kinnekulle and combines cultural and historical impressions with green trails and family-friendly experiences. Anyone planning a trip to western Sweden will find a variety of ways to enjoy a diverse day here: a museum about the history of the town, one of Sweden’s oldest churches, public art, as well as walking and exercise trails.

History at the Götene Museum and Götene Church

The Götene Museum provides information ranging from early Swedish history to the development of society in Götene. It is located on the ground floor of Centrumhuset. The exhibits include photographs from the late 19th century, including images by Karl Johansson, further pictures documenting the development of Götene, and numerous objects from the former agricultural society. The museum thus offers concrete insights into the history of the town and the transformation of rural life.

Another important landmark is Götene Church, dating from 1125 and counted among Sweden’s oldest churches. From 1 October to 31 March, it is open for visits daily from 09:00 to 16:00. In front of the church, Sankta Helenas rabatt features decorations and plantings inspired by motifs from the history of Saint Helena. The Sankta Elins led pilgrimage and hiking trail also begins at the church. It leads via Ova, Varnhem and Våmb to Sankta Helena’s Church in Skövde.

Art and special places in the townscape

Götene can also be explored through its sculptures and smaller cultural venues. The bronze sculpture “Sankta Helena till häst” stands in a park along Järnvägsgatan. It depicts Götene’s patron saint on her way to the consecration of Götene Church. The sculpture was created in 2022 by sculptor Martin Hansson in Husaby. Götene Fornpark is located next to Västerbybadet. Torsten Fridh’s monolith Pomona stands in the park by the pool. It is made of red Kinnekulle granite; its symmetrical shapes are crafted from sandstone.

Other cultural destinations include Galleri Hemmavé at Alsborgsgatan 11–13 in Block Melonen 6 and Bio Göta Lejon at Torggatan 4. Bio Göta Lejon is located in Götasalen in the basement of Centrumhuset. These permanent venues complement visits to the museum and church with further destinations in the town.

Walking trails for different day plans

For a peaceful stay surrounded by greenery, a footpath leads from Badhusparken along the Göteneån to Lindplanteringen and onwards to the allotment garden area, where a walking trail runs. There is also a tree-filled green area between Götene Church and the Göteneån. Anyone looking for a short exercise circuit will find a 2.5-kilometre running or training route in Brännaskogen. Behind Folkets park begins a 1.2-kilometre forest walk with tasks and information about the forest.

For families, Solbackens lekplats is a suitable destination: the adventure playground is located in a park in Götene and is designed for children of all ages. The 48-kilometre Kinnekulleleden also runs through Götene Municipality. This scenic trail lies inland in western Sweden on the southeastern shore of Lake Vänern and is suitable for the whole family.
