Broddetorp is located directly on Lake Hornborgasjön and combines an impressive lakeside landscape with nature observation, hiking trails and an old cultural and agricultural landscape. Those planning a trip with a range of interests will find opportunities here for active days, peaceful nature experiences, regional cuisine and historical discoveries.

Lake Hornborgasjön and the landscape around Broddetorp

Lake Hornborgasjön is a birdwatching lake all year round. The Lake Hornborgasjön Nature Reserve covers around 4,000 hectares and is designated as a Natura 2000 site. Gullängen offers a particularly striking landscape: this small-scale mosaic landscape comprises open grasslands, nutrient-rich wetlands, pastureland, old oaks, hazel groves, broadleaf forests and swamp forests.

The southern part of the Gullängen Nature Reserve contains numerous archaeological remains, including burial grounds and prehistoric agricultural land. This makes it possible to combine a nature outing with a glimpse into the area’s long history. Broddetorp itself is also characterised by an old cultural and agricultural landscape with prehistoric remains and a range of experiences.

Birdwatching and trails by the lake

There are two visitor centres at Lake Hornborgasjön. Naturum Hornborgasjön is located on the eastern shore of the lake near Broddetorp. Its exhibition focuses on the area’s nature, geology, history and birdlife. Naturum also has a birdwatching tower with a lift. The visitor destination lies along Kulturväg Skaraborg and can therefore also be included in a themed drive through the region.

There are several different options for walks and hikes. The 3.5-kilometre Bolumsleden hiking trail runs through the old cultural landscape on the eastern side of Lake Hornborgasjön and starts at the Naturum Hornborgasjön car park. The Faledreven hiking trail runs through the Ruskela källa Nature Reserve. Broddetorp also has several hiking trails surrounded by abundant birdlife and lush vegetation. Between April and September, organised walks for the public are offered around Naturum Hornborgasjön.

Culture, history and regional impressions

In addition to nature, Broddetorp offers a diverse cultural scene with active artists and craftspeople. Heljesgården presents local agricultural traditions from the 19th century through the interwar period. For a trip with a cultural focus, this offering can be combined with the archaeological traces in Gullängen and the exhibition at Naturum, without every outing having to be the same in character.

Broddetorps kyrka can also be included in your plans. Seasonal opening hours are given for the church from 22 June to 16 August: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at weekends from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you plan to visit, you should take these stated times into account when planning your day.

Fika and culinary discoveries

At Lake Hornborgasjön, Café Doppingen next to Naturum at Fågeludden is one option for a break with fika and lunch in a natural setting. The café at Löfwings Ateljé & Krog serves homemade cakes and filled rolls. Those wishing to combine regional cuisine with history, nature and culture can also consider the bookable culinary trips offered by Falbygdsresor.

A holiday apartment or holiday home in Broddetorp is particularly an obvious base if you want to divide your days between the lake, birdwatching, hiking trails, cultural history and regional culinary delights. When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these focuses should define your trip and how much time you want to allow for different types of excursions.
