Äspered combines a distinctive church history with nature by Lake Tolken, walks through beech forest and a long-standing local sausage-making tradition. There are also activities for mountain bikers and a paved road cycling route around two lakes. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can first consider which of these aspects of the area will shape your travel plans: cultural history, outdoor activities or regional traditions.

The church and traces of history

Äspered Church was built in 1860–1862. Its interior, which has remained almost unchanged, and the equally unchanged furnishings in the chancel make it a distinctive cultural feature of the area. The chancel includes altar railings, an altar screen, hymn-number boards and choir stalls. The wooden tiered seating and wooden floor in the gallery have also been fully preserved. These details offer a reason to consider not only the church’s construction period when planning your trip, but also its traditional furnishings.

Another historical trace leads to the island of Holmen near Äspered. There are the remains of an old castle, whose origins date back to the 15th century and which once belonged to the noble Brahe family. The castle fell into ruin in the 17th century and burned down in 1706 during a thunderstorm. History enthusiasts will find a tangible connection to the area’s past here, while the church represents a different era and another part of its cultural heritage.

Nature by Lake Tolken and visitor information

Sundholmen Nature Reserve is located near Äspered, on the western shore of Lake Tolken. It is a 20-hectare state nature reserve. Visitors can walk through beech forest in the reserve’s mainland section, the Hägnagärdet area. Sundholmen’s location is also useful for finding your way: it is close to Äspered, on Lake Tolken between Borås and Ulricehamn.

There are two specific reference points for getting to the reserve. The nearest bus stop to Sundholmen Nature Reserve is Äspered Church; from there, it is about 2.4 kilometres to the nature reserve. There are parking spaces by the roadside at Hägnagärdet, near the turnoff to the reserve. You can take these details into account when planning your outings and choosing your accommodation.

Äspered bathing area is also on the western shore of Lake Tolken. There is a barbecue area at the bathing area. This means that the places described in Äspered include both a protected natural area and a spot by the lake.

Walking, cycling and outdoor activities

For a two-wheeled tour, the Two-Lakes road cycling route follows paved roads around Lakes Åsunden and Tolken. It is suitable for road bikes or regular bicycles. One reference point along the route: its highest point comes shortly after the route turns off at Äspered. The information about the surface and types of bicycles can help you assess the tour based on your own bike and preferred route format; no route distance is specified.

Äspereds IF offers MTB training for adults, which mostly takes place on trails around Äspered and also includes skills training. The youth group is open to all children up to and including age 16 and does not require previous MTB experience. Youth training focuses on technique and basic skills, and includes practice riding on easy trails.

Äsperedshallen is suitable for gymnastics, football, floorball, handball, basketball, badminton and volleyball. The range of sports listed adds various indoor activities to the outdoor options. Which of these options is relevant to your trip depends on the activities you want to focus on in Äspered.

A local Christmas tradition

Food and tradition are also part of the area’s character: in Äspered, Sjötorpskorv has been made using the same recipe for at least 100 years in connection with the Christmas slaughter. For almost 50 years, Äspereds hembygdsförening has maintained the tradition of making Sjötorpskorv using the same recipe for the Christmas market in Sjötorp. Those interested in local customs will encounter a tradition associated with both a recipe and a specific occasion.
