Älvängen combines industrial history, viewpoints and varied trails with special ideas for shared family days. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment can consider the town as a base for culture, cycling and hiking, and decide on their priorities while planning the trip.

Rope-making and local history

A notable part of the town’s history is Carlmarks repslageri. The business moved its premises from Åmål to Älvängen in 1916; today, the building is protected as a listed historic structure. Repslagarmuseet presents the history of rope-making and Carlmarks’ 200-year heritage – from craftsmanship to industry. Whenever the museum is open, rope is always being made there; other forms of handicraft are also occasionally demonstrated.

With the exception of the room for temporary exhibitions, the museum is accessible to wheelchairs, walkers and pushchairs. This makes it possible to include a museum visit in a day planned around the different needs of family members. The oldest surviving Folkets Hus in Ale Municipality, located in Älvängen, is also part of the town’s history.

Cycling tours with different profiles

Several signposted options are available for active days. The Älvängen–Utby–Torp–Hältorp cycling tour is 13 km long and designated as a family tour. Shorter is the 5 km Älvängen–Paradiset cycling tour, which is considered family-friendly for children. This route offers views across the Älvdalen.

Those who prefer a longer route can choose the 11 km Älvängen–Kilanda cycling tour. It is designated as a longer family tour and leads over the hills from Älvängen to Starrkärr.

Viewpoints and trails in the surrounding area

Along the Rannebergsstigen trail, signs provide information about the Viking Age, the hillfort, prehistoric agricultural land and prehistoric settlements in the surrounding area. Ranneberget is a landmark of Älvängen; from its summit, there are impressive views in every direction.

The Pilgrimsleden Göta älv also offers opportunities for hiking. In the wider region, the trail runs from Gothenburg to Vänersborg. One section of the Pilgrimsleden Göta älv runs from Bohus railway station to Älvängen railway station. Älvängen is served by the Alependel commuter train and regional trains.

Special details for your day plan

The Rallatébäcken stream is part of the local landscape: its water is channelled into the Grönån, which in turn flows into the Göta älv. For much of its route through Älvängen, the Rallatébäcken runs underground in a pipe. For a quieter activity, there is also the open-access library in Älvängen. It can be unlocked using a library card, even when no staff are present.

The activity playground in Älvängen has basketball facilities and a multi-purpose arena with artificial turf for ball sports. Together with the designated family tours, this creates a choice between exercise, history, viewpoints and an uncomplicated stop along the way. When searching for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider which of these activities should be the focus of your stay.
