Surahammar combines a vivid industrial history with a varied landscape of waterways and nature. Industrial Heritage, Church Art and Historical Traces

A prominent starting point for exploring the town’s cultural history is Sura kyrka. It stands on a hill next to the Strömsholmskanal and was built between 1890 and 1892 in the Neo-Romantic style according to plans by the architect Gustaf Pettersson. The inauguration was conducted by Bishop Gottfrid Billing. Inside, there is a choir painting by Nils Aron Berge, completed in 1956. It depicts several hundred figures, including local residents and the ironworks.

The Surahammars Bruksmuseum is housed in a workshop building where part of the equipment has been preserved in its original location. There, visitors can follow the entire production chain from pig iron to finished railway wheels. A guided tour lasts approximately one hour. The carriage hall includes, among other things, the patron’s representative carriage, the “Kupén” carriage from 1900, a hearse and the Vaulunder locomotive with two carriages.

The Motorcykelmuseet Gyllene Hjulet also has its own special focus. Around 120 objects are on display, including motorcycles dating from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1970s. Another unusual chapter in the town’s history is the year 1897: that was when Sweden’s first car with an internal combustion engine was manufactured in Surahammar by the engineer Gustav Eriksson. The former inn and the former Gyllene Hjulet works canteen have been preserved and feature murals by the artist Jerk Werkmäster.

Paths, Water and Nature in the Surrounding Area

For a quieter part of the day, Bruksparken is a good choice; it is considered the oldest park in Surahammar. The entire historic trail in Surahammar is accessible to prams and wheelchairs. This makes it possible to plan a visit to the town differently even when not all travelers share the same interests or pace.

Those who prefer longer walks will find another option in Bruksleden. Stage 8 passes the outskirts of Surahammar after approximately five kilometers. The Rövalls- och Stingsmossen protected area can only be reached on foot via Bruksleden from the surrounding area. Starting points are Surahammars Golfklubb to the south or Ramnäs to the west.

There are also specific excursion destinations by the water. In the surrounding area, the camping beach at Magsjön has jetties, a diving tower or diving trampoline, streetball, a beach volleyball court and a barbecue area. The Kohagen nature reserve has three picnic areas with fire pits and views of the Kolbäcksån. At Gnien, the Kolbäcksån widens into a lake; numerous swans, ducks and wading birds rest there in spring and autumn. Gnien is also a bird sanctuary. During the seasonal restrictions in force there, visiting the birdwatching tower as well as boating and canoeing through the protected area are permitted.

Surahammars Golfklubb has an 18-hole parkland course at the northern entrance to Surahammar. The mountain-biking trails near Lindmuren start at the golf club.
