Ammarnäs is located in the heart of the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. The village combines an exceptional cultural landscape with hiking trails, winter activities and vibrant local traditions. Those planning a trip can choose between short walks, a longer hike along the Kungsleden Trail, Sámi history and nature experiences.

A Cultural Landscape with Sámi History

The natural meadows of the Ammarnäs Delta have been used for haymaking since the early 19th century. The hay barns are particularly impressive: they have a unique underfloor construction that makes them especially high to protect them from the annual floods. The landscape therefore tells not only of agriculture, but also of how the inhabitants adapted to the conditions of the river delta.

The Ammarnäs lapplatsen deltat cultural reserve is located in the village of Ammarnäs. The village is also home to the church, which was built between 1910 and 1912 according to plans by the architect Torben Grut. Next to the church is a well-preserved Sámi church town with kåtor and log cabins. These places give your trip a historical focus without requiring you to miss out on nature experiences.

Naturum, River Landscapes and Orientation on Site

Naturum Vindelfjällen Ammarnäs provides information about the area's animals, plants, geology and cultural history. Experienced staff offer hiking tips and practical advice. Naturum also offers guided tours in the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. This makes it a useful starting point for planning your day if you would first like to gain an overview of the landscape and possible hiking experiences.

Another distinctive location is Ammarnäs Hembygdsgård on Hemnäset, where the Vindelälven and Tjulån rivers meet. Its location at this confluence adds a tangible connection to the surrounding river landscape to the cultural history of the village.

Hiking Between Short Trails and the Kungsleden Trail

Ammarnäs has a well-developed network of local hiking trails, with routes ranging from one-hour walks to day hikes. This allows you to vary your days and adapt the length of your planned activity to your travel group without committing to just one type of tour.

For a longer hike, the Kungsleden Trail is particularly important. The section of the Kungsleden between Ammarnäs and Hemavan is 78 km long. Ammarnäs is the natural starting point for a week-long hike along the Kungsleden to Hemavan. Anyone planning this section should take the total distance and the nature of a multi-day trip into account when choosing the focus of their holiday.

Winter Trails and Fishing

Ammarnäs also offers clear points of reference for trip planning in winter. There are 21 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in Ammarnäs. In the area around Ammarnäs, there are also 150 kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails. These two figures represent different ways of experiencing the winter landscape.

The Tjulån is known for grayling fishing. Ammarnäsöringen is also a distinct strain of large-growing brown trout. Those interested in rivers and fishing will find a special connection with nature here that extends beyond hiking.

Local Traditions Throughout the Year

The residents of Ammarnäs have been growing potatoes on Potatisbacken for more than 150 years. Every July, Ammarnäs Hembygdsgård hosts the annual Ammarnäs hembygdsdagar, featuring an auction, a pentathlon and musical entertainment. A trip in July can therefore offer an insight into local events as well as nature and history.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Ammarnäs can be reached by train, bus, car or plane. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first decide which travel idea should take priority: short hikes and Naturum, the cultural sites in the village, the Kungsleden section to Hemavan, winter ski trails or the river landscape around Tjulån.
