Robertsfors combines industrial history with river landscapes and a variety of experiences. Around the Rickleån, old trails lead all the way to the river mouth, while the Robertsfors bruksområde, the Robertsfors Bruksmuseum and preserved railway technology make the development of the town visible. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore consider whether culture, walks, nature experiences or regional excursions should be the focus of your trip.

Industrial heritage in the Robertsfors bruksområde

A special starting point for exploring the town’s history is the Bruksjärnvägen. At the time, it was the world’s northernmost narrow-gauge electrified railway; its track gauge is 750 mm. Today, around 700 metres of track remain. Restored locomotives and carriages can be viewed in a restored engine shed. The Robertsfors Bruksmuseum presents the development of industrialisation from 1758 to the middle of the 20th century.

The Robertsfors bruksområde displays traces of industrialisation from 1758 to the present day and is one of Sweden’s areas of national interest for heritage conservation. The historically shaped surroundings include workers’ housing, offices, a manor house and a mechanical workshop. There are also agricultural buildings made of slag stone, including a granary, barn, stable and former dairy. Anyone interested in technology, working life and regional history will find several different ways to explore Robertsfors here.

Robertsfors kyrka is also protected as ecclesiastical heritage through a special decision. The Egnahemsområdet Trädgårdsstaden, designed by the architect P O Hallman, is also located in the town. Large plots and outbuildings situated far back on the properties characterise the neighbourhood. It forms part of the national interest for heritage conservation and was laid out according to a garden-city plan from 1901. Since 2011, the public sculpture Häger has stood at Tvättstugeudden on the Rickleån.

In addition to its historical perspective, the Robertsfors Bruksmuseum offers a culinary break: the café serves homemade fika pastries and open sandwiches. The Barnens Bruk playground is located immediately next to the museum. It was designed by Katarina Paulsson, inspired by the surroundings and the history of the ironworks. This makes it possible to combine a stay focused on cultural history with a discovery break of their own for children.

Trails, river and nature experiences

The old Flottarstigen and Fiskestigen trails run along the Rickleån from the village of Överklinten through the main town of Robertsfors to the mouth of the Rickleån. After Robertsfors, Fiskestigen continues to the Klubben nature reserve at the river mouth. Flottarstigen leads to the Robertsfors bruksområde industrial area, which is of industrial-historical interest. Depending on your interests, you can therefore focus on the river landscape, nature or industrial history without confusing the respective destinations.

The section of the Rickleån along Fiskestigen from Robertsfors towards the Klubben nature reserve was never cleared for log driving and still retains its unique surroundings. Other notable destinations include the Åknät “Hexan” and Åknät “Vittran” shelters. “Hexan” has a sleeping area three metres above the ground, reached via a net. “Vittran” offers a place for an evening barbecue by the Rickleån.

The architecturally designed Johanneslund “Grounded” shelter can be reached from the car park at Laxbacken via a footpath and a bridge over the Rickleån.

Golf, swimming and cultural programme

For an active day of travel, the Robertsfors Golfklubb course has 18 holes and a par of 72. Robertsfors badhus offers warm-water bathing for various target groups, as well as public bathing and swimming for training. Another cultural offering comes from the Robertsfors Teater & Musik association: it organises theatre, music and dance performances, most of which take place in the theatre hall of Centrumshuset in Robertsfors. Robertsfors musiksällskap was founded in 1969 and stages large-scale musical productions.

Regional excursions and getting there

In the wider regional area, the fishing district managed by Rickleåns Övre FvO extends from Bruksforsen in Robertsfors to Åselestupet above Överklinten. Fishing for salmon, sea trout, grayling, resident trout, pike, perch and roach is possible in this section. To travel from Umeå to Robertsfors, you can consider regional bus routes 12, 17 and 20.

Robertsfors is therefore well suited to travel plans that combine several types of day out: industrial heritage and fika, trails along the Rickleån, golf or swimming, as well as regional nature and fishing experiences. When looking for accommodation, it is worth deciding first on the focus of your trip and then choosing a suitable holiday apartment or holiday home in Robertsfors. For other places in the same area, you can also include Djäkneboda, Robertsfors Ö, Flarken, Ånäset and Bygdeå in your further travel planning.
