Bjurholm combines culture, nature and a wide range of activities into a destination with many different facets. In the centre, you can discover historical and local insights, while hiking trails, nature reserves and experiences throughout the municipality enrich your time outdoors. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore choose between a stay focused more on the town itself and a travel plan that includes nature and winter experiences.

Culture and Local Stories in Bjurholm

A prominent landmark in the centre is Bjurholm Church, which was inaugurated in 1935. Bjurholms Hembygdsgården offers another way to explore the area’s history. The heritage site comprises several unique buildings; the first building was moved there in 1947. This means that a visit can be combined not only with seeing a single building but also with exploring various historic buildings.

Art and regional connections are also part of the local landscape. In the village of Balsjö, 5 km west of Bjurholm, stands the artwork “Oh Du härliga land”. It consists of eight sculptures on eight iron posts. Bjurholm is also one of the five member municipalities of Konstvägen Sju Älvar. The route runs from the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in the east to Borgafjäll in the west, offering a broader regional perspective on the landscape and culture.

Hiking Trails, Views and Nature Experiences

For active days, the Öreälvens hiking trail provides a clear route: it runs between Örträsk and Bjurholm, passing the Långforsen and Näslandsforsen rapids. In Balbergets Nature Reserve, a marked trail leads to the summit of Balklinten. From there, the view extends far across the area around Bjurholm. These two destinations appeal to different preferences: the hike along the Öreälven combines the trail with notable rapids, while Balklinten offers a viewpoint in a nature reserve.

Bjurholm Golf Course also combines golf with beautiful nature. Those who would like to get to know moose can visit Älgens Hus, a moose park with tame moose and calves in a village west of Bjurholm. When looking for suitable accommodation, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus primarily on culture in the town, hiking and views, or excursions in the surrounding area.

Winter, Activities and Family-Friendly Options

Bjurholm reveals another side in winter. Weather permitting, Bjurholm’s ice rink behind Castor School on the artificial turf field is iced from calendar week 51 through and including week 10. Brattåkern is a small sledding hill with a tow lift in the centre of Bjurholm, between Kyrkogatan and National Road 92. Those who would rather end an active day indoors can visit the bowling alley. It has four lanes that can be rented by the hour.

Bjurholm Swimming Hall offers fitness swimming, public swimming, family swimming and swimming for young children. This allows daily plans to include a variety of activities without focusing exclusively on one season or a specific type of excursion. In winter, the municipality has 420 km of groomed main snowmobile trails as well as approximately 200 km of smaller snowmobile trails.

Local Festivals and Choosing Accommodation

Bärfestivalen includes a market featuring berry-inspired products and handicrafts. Bärfestivalen took place on 5 September in the centre of Bjurholm and was described as an annual event; the festival also included activities for children. This complements the nature and cultural experiences with a local event featuring a market atmosphere.

If hiking trails, the nature reserve, golf, moose or the regional snowmobile trails are more important to you, you should adjust your search area accordingly to include the surrounding area and the municipality. Bjurholm therefore provides a good basis for arranging your accommodation and desired travel experiences according to your own holiday pace.
