Nynäshamn between coastal paths and history
Accommodation in Nynäshamn
A coastal road with an Olympic past, paths through Lövhagen, historic traces of the bathing resort and a railway museum show different sides of Nynäshamn. There are also art exhibitions and harbour life at the guest harbour. The mix ranges from nature and outdoor activities to history and culture.
Coastal scenery and paths in Lövhagen
Strandvägen, also known as Ringvägen, runs along the sea to Lövhagen. On one side are coniferous forests; on the other, the open sea. Lövhagen is one of Nynäshamn’s most impressive and easily accessible natural areas. It has gravel roads, trails and marked paths, including two marked routes with more challenging terrain.
You can also experience the coastal scenery by bicycle: a ride along Strandvägen in Nynäshamn is quiet and easy, with views of the sea. This offers different ways to get active—from an easy cycle by the sea to the marked paths, two of which pass through more challenging terrain. When planning your days, you can take these differences into account when choosing your activities.
Strandvägen and the history of the bathing resort
Strandvägen also has a historical connection: it was built for spectators at the Olympic sailing competitions held in Stockholm in 1912. The road thus links the coastal landscape with a specific chapter in the area’s history.
Trehörningen eventually became the centre of Nynäshamn’s bathing resort. Between 1906 and 1913, Badhotellet, Parkhotellet, Strandhotellet and a casino were built there. Together, the names and the dates offer insight into the development of the area’s buildings around the bathing resort at the time. They add another focus to the story of Strandvägen: Nynäshamn’s former tourist life.
Railways and art
The Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum displays a collection of older railway vehicles in its engine shed. Using steam locomotives and carriages, the museum operates heritage train services, including on the Nynäsbanan. Operating dates may vary; if you are interested, check the schedule before planning a visit. The collection and train services offer two different ways to explore railway history: seeing older vehicles in the engine shed and travelling on heritage trains.
The Nynäshamns konsthall hosts exhibitions by professional artists and amateurs. Its exhibition programme also includes spring salons, student and photography exhibitions, as well as exhibitions aimed at children. If you are travelling with children and would like to include art in your plans, you can look out for these explicitly child-oriented exhibitions. The railway museum and art gallery offer different cultural highlights to consider when planning your holiday.
Harbour life and finding a holiday rental
Nynäshamns Gästhamn has 300 berths, well protected inside the breakwater. The harbour sheds sell coffee and pastries, art and crafts, antiques and clothing. The harbour adds another focus to the nature and culture on offer: sheltered berths and a varied range of goods in the harbour sheds.
When looking for a holiday rental in Nynäshamn, it helps to first work out what you want to focus on during your holiday. Would you mainly like to include coastal paths and sea views, are you more interested in the history of the bathing resort and railways, or would you like to mix art and the harbour into your days? Compare your plans with the accommodation’s location so that your choice suits the experiences that matter to you.
