Huddinge has many different facets: pathless forests, marshes and lakes sit alongside hiking trails, cultural venues and the railway station, an important transport hub. This lets you consider nature, outdoor activities and culture as separate priorities for your stay. When choosing a holiday rental, a useful question is whether you want your vacation days to focus mainly on hiking, water, cycling and winter sports, or on museums and art.

Forest Landscapes and Protected Nature

Flemingsbergsskogen is one of the largest pathless forest areas in Stockholm County. Marshes and coniferous forest define the area. In the Orlången Nature Reserve, the landscape is open and varied; nocturnal wildlife there includes tawny owls and hunting bats. So if you want to experience landscapes beyond the daytime hours, you can also find a special connection to nocturnal wildlife here.

The Paradiset Nature Reserve brings together old-growth forest, marshland, fields, pasture and several lakes. Rest areas and wind shelters are also among the facilities in the area. For orientation, Naturkartan provides visitor information on Huddinge’s nature reserves, hiking trails, barbecue areas, bathing spots, observation towers, fishing lakes and ancient monuments. This makes it possible to include different nature themes in your plans, rather than centring every excursion on a single type of landscape.

Trails for Short Loops and Longer Hikes

The Huddingeleden is just under 80 kilometres long and passes through 13 protected nature areas. Along the route, untouched forests and lakes rich in birdlife alternate with a lively cultural landscape and built-up areas of high-rise buildings and villas. A hike on the Huddingeleden also takes you through deciduous and spruce forest and offers views of Lake Drevviken. The route therefore showcases a greater variety of landscapes; at Sundby Gård, there is also a two-kilometre illuminated loop.

The Stenbergsleden, also known as Gröna spåret, runs between Sundby and Visättra. Along the way are rocky pine forest, spruce forest, marshland and pasture. There is a large car park and information boards at the entrance to Sundby Gård; from there, you can reach the marked Gröna spåret and Huddingeleden trails. This starting point therefore offers a choice of both a shorter loop and access to longer hiking trails.

Water, Cycling and Winter Sports

Flottsbro brings together several different activity options. The Bike Park has trails for everyone from beginners to advanced riders. The ski area has a vertical drop of 103 metres and a longest run of 700 metres. At the beach, there are two bathing jetties and a guest boat mooring; the beach is 100 metres long. These figures provide more specific points of reference when planning whether to include Flottsbro in your vacation for cycling, the ski area or the water.

A canoe trip is another option: from the Drevviken Nature Reserve, you can paddle by canoe to Kalvfjärden in the Baltic Sea. If you want to combine water activities with hiking or culture, you can treat the different themes as separate priorities for your vacation days.

Mills, Museums and Art

By Lake Orlången stands Balingsta kvarn, a windmill and Huddinge’s only surviving older mill. It has been preserved almost unchanged. The Litografiska museet is a working museum with a lithographic workshop and exhibition hall. The Nyboda hembygds- och skolmuseum displays objects and also shows what interiors looked like from the late 19th century onwards.

Fullersta Gård presents an art programme featuring professional artists who have exhibited both in Sweden and internationally. Huddinge also displays works by the satirist EWK and the poet Karin Boye; both have close ties to the area. Together with the mill and museums, these provide several different cultural themes for a stay that also takes local art and history into account alongside nature and outdoor activities.

Choosing a Location

Huddinge railway station is an important transport hub. Commuter trains and buses connect the area with other parts of the municipality and the Stockholm region. If you also want to consider onward travel by public transport when choosing your holiday rental, this hub provides a useful reference point. For your excursions, you can choose your priorities according to the landscapes, trails, water activities or cultural venues that interest you most.
