Åkers Styckebruk is located on Lake Visnaren on the edge of Åkers Bergslag. The town combines a long ironworks history with marshland, circular trails and water-based experiences. When planning a trip, you can choose between active days on the Sörmlandsleden, cultural and historical discoveries, and excursions on the water.

Hiking between the Ironworks and Nature Reserve

A particularly varied starting point is stage 16:1 of the Sörmlandsleden. It is 11 kilometres long and is located in Åkers Styckebruk. The route first passes through an old ironworks landscape and then through undeveloped areas of Åkers Bergslag. The route also includes the Lenellstorpets Nature Reserve and a nutrient-rich fen with rare orchids. The Gallsjömossen Nature Reserve is located nearby and the stage leads to it; there is a 4-kilometre circular trail there.

There is a specific bus connection for travelling to the starting point: Bus 301 runs from Strängnäs, and bus 306 from Läggesta. In Åkers Styckebruk, there is a car park behind Folkets hus, about 200 metres from the starting point. This is helpful if you want to combine your hike with clear planning for the start.

There are also several options for shorter or differently sized tours. The Åkersspåret comprises two illuminated circular routes of 0.9 and 2.4 kilometres near Bruksvallen. In the Ulva recreational area, there are running trails of 3, 5 and 10 kilometres. The Marviksleden starts and ends at Malsjön and is 6 kilometres long. The Stånggångsleden starts and ends at Göksjön by the former Hjulhuset and is 5 kilometres long.

Industrial Culture and Historic Sites

The Åkers Bruksmuseum presents the history of Åkers Jern Bruk, which was founded in 1580. The present blast furnaces in Åkers Styckebruk date from 1795. The Motstugan, where moulds were made, has also been preserved on the works site. A nature reserve and a limestone quarry in Åkers Bergslag were used from the Middle Ages until the 1940s. This means that nature and industrial history come together within a closely connected thematic area during a stay, without this implying a specific route between the individual locations.

The Engelska parken, laid out from the 1780s onwards, complements this historical focus. The park is accessible year-round, and the surrounding works landscape is also open to visitors. The manor house, however, is private. Åkers bruksmuseum is located next to Engelska parken and is open in summer. The Bruksarkiv preserves the old archive of the ironworks, with documents dating from the early 17th century, as well as the Wahrendorff archive of the trading house "Wahrendorff et Co" in Stockholm.

Visnaren, Canoe Tours and Further Discoveries

Åkers Styckebruk is also suitable as a starting point for a water route. The Åkers Styckebruk–Marvikarna–Gnesta canoe trail begins at Lake Visnaren, passes through the three elongated Marviken lakes and is 40 kilometres long in total. Kanotkungen rents out canoes, Canadian canoes and kayaks from Åkers Styckebruk. In Marvikarna, paddling tours lasting 1 to 4 days are offered; for day tours, the start and finish are at Kanotkungen in Åkers Styckebruk.

For a different kind of excursion, Kalkbro is located nearby. The paved path from the car park to the limestone quarry is suitable for visitors with walking frames or pushchairs. There is also a historic mine in the area with a seasonally open mining museum and a restaurant.

Which Accommodation Location Suits Your Trip?

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Åkers Styckebruk, you can base your decision on your desired pace of travel. Those who want to hike will find trails of different lengths in the town and nearby, as well as the well-described access to stage 16:1. For days focused on culture, the museum, blast furnaces, Engelska parken and the archive are ideal for a stay centred on industrial history. Those who prefer water-based experiences can include Lake Visnaren and the canoe tours in their plans. The towns Stallarholmen, Strängnäs and Mariefred offer additional points of reference for further travel planning in the region.
