Forsa combines an unusual industrial history with surroundings shaped by rivers, lakes, forests and farmland. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment as a base for a trip combining culture and nature will find specific points of interest here: historic facilities and residences, the Forsaån and its connection to several lakes, a hiking trail, and information about the development of the locality.

Industrial History Around Forsa Bruk

A waterfall near Forsa made it possible to operate a bar iron forge as early as the 17th century. Under the leadership of the Indebetou family, Forsa Bruk experienced its heyday in the second half of the 18th century and during the 19th century. A nail forge, a bar iron forge, a mill and a sawmill transformed Forsa Bruk into a village with a school, residences and a shop. This development makes the locality particularly interesting for travellers who want to learn not only about the landscape during their stay, but also about the history of an earlier working and living environment.

The buildings also tell the story of this era. Nya Forsa, also known as Lilla Forsa, was built in 1827. Johan Daniel Indebetou (1804–1880) and his wife Beata, née Almgren (1811–1861), lived in Nya Forsa as a newly married couple in 1833. Nya Gården became the main estate of the papermill from 1826 onwards. Forsa pappersbruk was built between 1828 and 1831. When it was finally demolished in 1931, only the boiler house of Forssa Pappersbruk remained.

There is an information board from the Östra Vingåker local heritage association about Forsa pappersbruk on site. It is one of the specific points of reference for anyone wishing to include the history of the papermill and the former industrial facilities in their trip.

Forsaån, Lakes and Protected Nature

The Forsaån drains Lake Tisnaren via Lillsjön near Forsa Bruk and continues into Lake Bjälken. Southwest of Katrineholm, the Forsaån/Lillsjön area is surrounded by forests and farmland. A dam regulates the Forsaån at Lillsjön. The Svinnäset wetland complex (SE0220341) is located in the lower reaches of the Forsaån and is designated as a Natura 2000 site.

Smaller habitats also contribute to the character of the surroundings. In the vicinity of the Forsaån there are key forest habitats, swamp forests, and meadows and pasture areas included in the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s grassland and pasture inventory. The Forsaån is also home to the nationally and internationally highly endangered thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus). Around the Forsaån, waterways, wetlands and various agricultural and forest habitats therefore shape the landscape.

Hiking and Practical Orientation

There is a hiking trail in a recreational and cultural landscape in the vicinity of the Forsaån. If you are travelling with different interests, this makes it possible to spend a day combining historical discoveries with movement through the landscape. The Forsa area is located along an existing road and near built-up areas. The area is also connected to the locality by a bus service. This information may play a role when choosing a holiday apartment if you do not want to plan your trip exclusively around a single attraction.

For further travel planning, you can also visit the pages on Valla, Katrineholm, Björkvik and Sköldinge. This allows you to compare Forsa with other localities and decide which base best suits your preferred focus on culture, landscape and outdoor activities.
